Crepes with Nutella and Strawberry Filling

When my sister and I were teens, we used to make these crepes together.  I’m not sure where we found the recipe.  It could be that we brought it home from French class.  If so, that’s about the only thing I brought home from French class.  The language lessons didn’t stick nearly as well as the memory of these crepes!

I hadn’t made them in years, partly due to the fact that I didn’t own a non-stick skillet.  I finally broke down and bought one last week.  It’s just a basic 10.5” WearEver brand.  The next day I picked up a copy of Kitchen Wisdom by Julia Child from the library.  The book is excellent and it really made me happy to see her recommend a basic non-stick skillet from WearEver, “available in any hardware store” as she put it.

Peaches and Cream Dessert

The first bite I took of this dessert tasted good. The next bite made me want to take another and another.  The more I ate, the more I enjoyed the combination of juicy peaches and sweet cream filling with the crunch of the crust.

This is adapted from Tina’s recipe for Strawberry Delight on her blog, Mommy’s Kitchen.  I used peaches instead of berries and frozen whipped topping instead of dream whip.

Frosted Banana Bars

These are so, very good.  Of course, anything topped with cream cheese frosting is delicious.  An online friend shared the recipe with me.  I’m not sure where she found it.  She says that it freezes well too, which is nice because it makes a big pan.  My family had no trouble eating them all though. Homemade Hot Cocoa Mix

I decided to make up a batch of homemade hot cocoa mix the other day.  My mom always made this when my sister and I were little, but it had been a long time since I’d made any.  I still have some Swiss Miss packets in the pantry, but the kids have been choosing this over the store-bought kind.

It’s really easy to make and you get a lot of mix with one batch.  Here’s what you’ll need: [Read more...]

Homemade Peppermint Marshmallows

I found this recipe on Little Birdie Secrets and knew I had to make it.  They were fun and easy to make.  I gave my boys the job of crushing the candy canes with a hammer, which made them happy.  The recipe makes a huge pile of marshmallows – perfect for giving some away and still having enough for your own hot cocoa. Homemade Peppermint Patties

I think I make more candy at Christmas than cookies.  I like to dip things in chocolate.

Peppermint Patties are easy to make, but they do take a bit of time.  It’s worth the effort.  The recipe makes a lot of candy, plenty to give some away and keep some for yourself. [Read more...]

Easy Bake Oven Snowball Cookies

We pulled the Easy Bake Oven out last night to make some cookies.  It was a Christmas gift for my daughter last year.  I’m happy to say that it’s gotten a fair amount of use.  We keep it in a room near the kitchen and I store the little pans and tools in the kitchen.  I also bought a cookbook called Baking with Mommy Cookbook.  It’s got easy recipes that taste good.  I refuse to buy the expensive mixes.

Sometimes, we bake a small portion of whatever we’re having for dinner in the EBO.  We’ve done Nachos, baked spaghetti, cheese tortillas, pizza…  It’s a fun way to spend time together. [Read more...]

Pumpkin Sheet Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

I’ve heard that there’s a canned pumpkin shortage going on.  I hope not, because you are going to want to make this cake.  It’s perfectly pumpkin-y with a soft, cream cheese frosting that makes you want to lick your lips, your fork, your plate and the pan.

The recipe makes a good-sized sheet cake so you can share it with a bunch of friends, or pop some in the freezer for another time.  You’ll still have plenty to eat for yourself.  I altered the recipe from the Amish Friends Cookbook.  My mother-in-law bought it for me for my birthday.  I love Amish cookbooks.  They’re 87.3% desserts with a few main dishes thrown in so as not to be too decadent.  They also have recipes for odd things like a drink called Hay-Time Switchel and Vinegar Punch.  [Read more...]

Cherry Squares

My favorite birthday treat is Cherry Squares. I don’t get them every year, but often my mom will bake a batch for me. Even though I did see her just 10 days before my birthday, she didn’t make me any. Can you believe that? I know. It’s a sad life I lead.

So, I decided to make a pan for myself. This is the first time I’ve ever made them. The recipe makes a large jelly roll pan, but I cut the recipe in half to make a 9×13 pan. Food blogging can start to go to a person’s hips. I did not need to chow down on a full recipe of these sweet cherry treats.
