Jim loves German Chocolate cake. I usually try to make him one for his birthday. This year, my mom mentioned this recipe which she got from my aunt.
It’s not a beautiful cake, but it is delicious with gooey sweet filling studded with coconut and pecans.
Apparently, my oldest son likes German Chocolate cakes too. I’m pretty sure he ate half the cake. 9×13 pan gone in 24 hours. Come to think of it, I’ve been noticing our food disappearing very quickly. Like the huge watermelon I cut late one evening. It was gone by lunch the next day! My son said he only had 1 bowl of it, but I think he refilled that bowl 10 times.
Here’s what you’ll need to make the cake. Maybe yours will last longer than ours.
- 1 cup chopped pecans
- 1 cup coconut
- 1 German chocolate cake mix + ingredients to make the cake according to the directions
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1 lb. powdered sugar
Mix the pecans and coconut together and sprinkle into a greased 9×13 pan.
Mix the German chocolate cake mix according to the package directions. Pour the batter over the coconut and pecans in the pan.
Stir the cream cheese and powdered sugar together. Dollop onto the cake mix. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes. Cool. To serve, dip it out and turn each piece upside down on the plate.
Here’s a photo of what it looked like before I baked it. Next time, I will make smaller dollops of the cream cheese mixture so it turns out more even, but it still worked fine this time. The cream cheese sinks into the batter and mixes with the coconut and pecans, creating gooey layers in the cake.

WOW, this looks awesome! German chocolate is a favorite around here too! I’m quite sure that I would be like your son and only eat “1 bowl”. Thanks!

Someone gave me the recipe for this years ago, and called it “earthquake quake”. I suppose because of the cracks on the top. Everytime I make it it’s a hit!

Can you substitute milk for water in a box German chocolate cake?

Am now super depressed after running to the kitchen and finding no coconut. 🙁 Have to make a dessert for church tonight and this looks scrumptious. Guess I am back to the cookies that I had planned. Coconut going on the shopping list for next time!

Is Oldest Son a teenager? If so, expect him to eat everything that doesn’t eat him. I had 5 sons, and somewhere around 13 to 14 yrs old they become hollow. Even the work of eating all that food makes them hungry. If they’re not eating, or rampaging over a sports field, they’re sleeping, draped across the living room furniture like great snoring whales in the middle of the day.
Rather than cooking enough to keep them happy (which is nigh impossible), now is the time to teach them to cook good healthy “Guy Food” for themselves. When they leave you for college they’ll thank you for the skill.

Barbara, I think you just described my kid! He’s nearly 16. He’s kind of tall and thin, but boy can he ever eat!

I have to say I live in germany for nearly 21 years now and I never ever came across this sort of cake! Germans like those with the butter cream filling, or how they call it “Marmor Kuchen” which translate to Marble cake and essentially consists of 2 different colored batters ( one w/ nesquick powder) stirred in the pan and resolving in a nice pattern when sliced up.

The recipe I have used for a decade or so also calls for 1cup(2sticks) of melted butter for the cream cheese, powdered sugar mix. : )

I made this today for a pot luck tonight. Topping did not sink down and mix with nuts and coconut. Just sat on top of the cake batter and the cake batter rose around the blobs of topping. I had a piece out of one corner.Tastes OK but not what I expected. Am still taking it to the pot luck. But am disappointed. There are no gooey layers. I followed the recipe but did not use the same cake mix brand and used a different brand of cream cheese too.
Don’t know if this could make a difference.
