I found this recipe stuck in my tattered recipe binder, jotted on a calendar page from 1998. I used to make it quite a bit, but somehow forgot about it. I’m glad that I found it again, because it’s really easy and good.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 3 carrots, peeled and diced
- onion, diced
- small green pepper, diced
- 2 stalks celery, diced (I didn’t have celery, so I left it out)
- 2 lb. round steak
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1 Tbs. vinegar
- 1/3 cup water
- salt and pepper
- 2 Tbs. flour
- 1/2 cup water
Place the meat in the crockpot. Put the diced veggies on top. Mix the ketchup, vinegar, water and salt and pepper together. Pour over the meat and veggies. Cook on low for 8-10 hours or high for 5-6 hours.
Remove the meat from the slow cooker. Turn it up to high. Mix the flour and 1/2 cup water together in a container with a tight-fitting lid. Shake it to combine until smooth. Whisk into the broth in the slow cooker and let it cook just a few minutes until it’s thickened a bit.
Thanksgiving is tomorrow. What are your plans? Are you cooking? Getting together with friends and family? Planning out your Black Friday shopping strategy?
We’ll be getting together with family over the weekend. Thanksgiving Day will involve a log on the fire, homemade soup (2 Thanksgiving dinners to come on the weekend) and decorating for Christmas.

Round steak is my FAVORITE! Going to try this soon. Have a great Thanksgiving! We’re staying home, but cooking a traditional meal. Looking forward to spending the whole day in the kitchen with my husband!

Is Round Steak the same as Round Cuve Steak?
Tiffany says
I’m not sure what round cuve steak is. Or did you mean cube steak? There are so many names for different cuts. Any cut of beef would work for this recipe.

When you don’t have the celery, just toss in some celery seed. A trick my mom taught me.

Those are pork chops in the picture !
Tiffany says
Nope, it’s round steak. They were cut and packaged much like pork chops, but it was beef round steak.
RC says
How do you serve it? (Do you slice the meat like beef tenderloin and then pour the warm sauce over each portion?) How many portions does this make?
Thanks!
RC

RC – This recipe should serve 4-6 people. And yes, slice the meat, pour the vegetable gravy over the meat and dinner is served!
