Honey Hoisin Chicken in the Slow Cooker

honey hoisin chicken ingr

This dinner was waiting for us when we came in from a marathon dentist appointment today.  It was so nice to throw some rice on to cook, steam some broccoli and sit down to dinner.  We ate every bite of it too.

The prep is simple, with just a few ingredients.  In case you’re wondering what the dixie cup in the picture holds, it’s white wine.  I froze wine in dixie cups instead of using ziplock bags this time.  It works great.

Here’s what you’ll need for the Honey Hoisin Chicken

Honey Hoisin Chicken in the Slow Cooker

Ingredients

  • 4-6 boneless chicken breasts
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup white wine or chicken broth
  • 1/4 tsp. ground ginger

Instructions

  1. Put the chicken in the crockpot.
  2. Mix the other ingredients together and pour over the chicken.
  3. Cook on high for 4-5 hours or low for 7-8 hours.

I’ve never used hoisin sauce, but Mark loves anything with ginger. I think we need to try this. Going to add it to next week’s menu right now. Thanks Tiffany!

  4. Ginger says:

Looks awesome. Just one question, your recipe says boneless chicken, picture is bone in. Does the cooking time change depending on which you use? I have bone in to use. Thanks so much.

    • Tiffany says:

Ginger, it is boneless chicken in the photo, but I can see why you’d think it had bones. You can use bone-in chicken for this recipe though. Just give it a long enough cooking time.

  5. Ginger says:

Wow! I turned my head sideways and can see it now! :o ) Thanks so much for your answer and all your hard work.

Had this for dinner tonight. So yummy. I served it over quinoa, with green beans and salad on the side. (I know I bought broccoli to go with this meal, but I couldn’t find it. I can see cookies disappearing, but broccoli???) I also opened a can of pineapple slices to go with it. I just thought the flavors would blend well. They did.

The children really liked this, even those who don’t love meat. We will have it again. Thanks so much!

  7. Lisa says:

Is your chicken frozen before it goes into the slow cooker?

    • Tiffany says:

Lisa, you can start with frozen boneless chicken. I do it that way sometimes. Just be sure to give it more time to cook.

  8. Ellen says:

Tiffany, I love your blog! (Found you from Org. Junkie). I am curious about freezing wine in paper cups?!? Do you cover the cups somehow?!
    Thank you!
    :)

    • Tiffany says:

Ellen, I didn’t cover them. I should have used some foil or something to cover them up. I didn’t end up having them for long, because the shelf they were on fell off the freezer door and some glass broke. I was afraid glass had gotten into the wine cups, because they fell too. Next time I’ll cover them with foil.

  9. Ellen says:

Good idea, Tiffany! Thank you for your quick response!

Where do you find Hoisen sauce at the store? I’m sure it depends on the store, but what is the general area? Thanks!

  12. Rachel says:

Tried the chicken it’s pretty good thanks for the recipe.

  13. Amber says:

Thanks for letting us know where to find the hoisin sauce! I found it in the store yesterday, tucked way back near the soy sauce. I never would have found it without having a good idea of where to look! Making this for dinner on Sunday!

  14. SandyW says:

I made this for dinner last night. I didn’t get it in the slow cooker so I put it in the oven. I think the color was better. My husband said it was a keeper. I had never used hoisen sauce before, but I will be from now on. I liked the flavor. I think this recipe would also be good on ribs or pork tenderloin.

  15. Flower says:

I was wondering if this would freeze well?

There’s only me and I have a 3qt crock pot. I don’t think I’d finish it all (then again if it’s as yummy as it sounds I just might) so I thought I’d ask if it would freeze well.

I can’t wait to try this!

    Thanks!

  16. Nina T. says:

Perfect timing! I have a jar of hoisin sauce in my pantry! Thanks!!!!

  17. I think I’ll have to try this recipe this week – it looks yummy!

  18. Debbie C. says:

Is there a substitute for the wine? Vinegar maybe???? Can’t wait to try this out! I love crockpot recipes!

  19. Katherine says:

Oh wow!!! Looks delicious! I am doing a few weeks of your “fill the freezer” menus right now, in preparation for a baby coming in about 2 wks and I just found this recipe. I made the virus killing soup and went to Dollar General and bought some really cheap white wine to go in it….bc we don’t drink, I used the 1/2c. in the recipe and poured out the rest!! I never even thought to freeze it! What a great idea that I will certainly do next time. Thank you for taking the time to do this for us!
