A layer of caramel. A layer of chocolate. A layer of pecans. How can you go wrong with that?
A friend of mine gave me a recipe for Turtle Brownies probably 15 years ago. I’ve never made them. The other day I ran across the recipe, but didn’t have the right ingredients. No problem. I altered the recipe liberally and came up with Gooey Turtle Bars. Very yummy!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 box yellow cake mix
- 3/4 cup melted butter
- 2/3 cup milk
- 1/2 cup pecans
- 1 cup chocolate chips
- 1 jar caramel sauce
Mix the cake mix with butter and milk. Pour half the batter into a 9×13 pan. Spread it out with a spatula. Bake 10-15 minutes at 350 degrees.
Pull the cake out of the oven and sprinkle the chocolate chips over the top. Add the pecans. Pour the caramel over the top of all of it as evenly as you can. Add the rest of the batter. Spread it with a spatula to cover as much of the surface as possible. It might not be totally covered and that’s okay.
Bake it again for 20 minutes. Cool completely before cutting.

Im in mid bake as I type. Not sure how I’m going to spread the top layer on, as it is SO THICK!!! Smells delicious, so even if they turn out ugly it will be good! I did add a smidge more milk just so I didn’t have to work so hard!

These sound DeLiCiOuS! They remind me of a dessert bar I used to make but have lost the recipe, I think they were called Goodbye Dollies… oh they were scrumptious.

Oh these look DeLiCiOuS! They remind me of a dessert bar I used to make, but lost the recipe long ago – I think they were called Goodbye Dollies… (because they didn’t last long!)… oh they were scrumptious.

I make a recipe very similar to these that uses condensed milk rather than caramel sauce. They are rich and delicious.

do you add the eggs water and oil as directed by the cake box with the milk and butter?
Tiffany says
Laura – on this recipe you just mix the butter and milk with the boxed mix instead of the typical eggs, oil and water.

I’ll admit I was skeptical because recipes with cake mixes are typically way too sweet. This Gooey Turtle Recipe is spot on, absolutely delightful, and easy. Couldn’t resist sampling a bit while it was still warm. SO GOOD. Will definitely make this a go-to recipe.
