I was headed to a family get together last week and needed to bring dessert. I couldn’t decide what to make so I looked around in a pantry and what I found created this deliciousness! This is one of the easiest desserts I’ve ever made and so good. I hope you enjoy as well. And its very customizable. You could use any type of cake mix. I think it would be good with spice cake. And you could use other fruits. Peaches would be so good too. If this gets your creative juices flowing and you make an alteration to this recipe please comment and let us know!
Here’s what you need:
- A box of cake mix (any kind will do – I used yellow cake)
- 1 stick of butter
- Dash of cinnamon
- 1/2 cup of brown sugar, packed
- handful of nuts (I used walnuts)
- 2-3 apples, sliced and skinned
Here’s what you do:
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and spray a 13 X 9 pan.
- Prepare the apples. Core, slice, and peel the skin off of them. I made mine very thin slices of apple.
- Layer the apples in the pan, then sprinkle with cinnamon.
- Pour the cake mix evenly over the cinnamon apples.
- Next you sprinkle the brown sugar over the cake mix, then sprinkle the nuts over the top.
- And the last step is to slice the butter real thin and cover the top.
- Bake for 35 minutes or until brown and bubbly.
- Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

I would have never thought you could use just a box of mix, butter and the fruit and that would make it moist enough! Can wait to try this. Thanks.

Yes – I just love this recipe. Let us know how you like it!
joyce says
do you mix the cake mix like it says on the box or just leave it dry?
RachaelW says
Hey Joyce, I know it seems crazy. But you literally sprinkle on dry. Just make sure to slice the butter on top like the picture.

thanks so much, I am going to try it right now

This is very popular in the South – we call it ‘dump cake’! Nice name, huh?! Except it generally has canned fruit. The apple pie filling with spice cake mix is really good! I’ve made lots of variations over the years, and it is always a crowd pleaser. And now I want cake….
RachaelW says
Mmmmm…yes cake for me now! HAHA! I liked using the fresh fruit better than canned because it wasn’t as mushy. Thanks for the tip, Kim!

I made this just this past Sunday. Everybody liked it. Was wondering tho, is it supposed to come out looking thin and flat? What does the cake mix actually do? I thought it would have been a little bit more fluffier. Thanks!
RachaelW says
Hey Mary, I’m glad everyone liked it. Yes it is supposed to come out like a crumb cake type of dessert. Mine was kinda flat as well. The cake mix basically acts as a light topping for the apples. Thanks for commenting!

Can I use margarine instead of butter
Tiffany says
Yes, margarine will work.
kathy says
if i use a pan that is a little smaller like 9 x 11 will it be ok?
Tiffany says
I’m probably too late to answer this, as you’ve probably already made the cake. I think a little smaller would work, but you may need to bake it longer. And you wouldn’t want to go too much smaller.

Do you ever do something and have a feeling that it is wrong, but you do it anyway? I do this often and 99% of the time I should have listened to my instincts. Please do not use a bundt pan to make this recipe, The cake mix will bake up and cover the topping. Plus it will take 25 to 30 minutes longer to bake. Once baked it looked nothing like a crumb cake but it was off the charts good.

Just found your Easy Apple Crumb Cake (described by someone like a “dump cake”) and signed up to your website. As this uses a dry cake mix covered in butter, can this be turned out onto a flat dish after bakine so the apple portion comes out on top or does it scoop out all broken up? I look forward to checking out all your recipes.

Glad to have you with us, Chris! This one pretty much crumbles with a few chunks of cakey goodness. It could be worth a try though, especially if you’re planning on topping it with ice cream anyway!
