Mint chocolate chip is such a classic flavor and it’s easy to make at home. You’ll only need 4 ingredients and an ice cream freezer. Like my other ice cream recipes, this one requires no cooking.
Homemade Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream
Ingredients
- 1 can sweetened condensed milk
- 2 cups half and half
- 1 tsp. peppermint extract
- about 1/2 cup chopped semi-sweet chocolate I chopped up chocolate chips
Instructions
- Mix everything but the chocolate chips together and pour into your ice cream freezer.
- Freeze it according to the directions on your freezer.
- Add the chocolate a few minutes before it’s done cranking.
- Serve right away or place in freezer to harden.
This makes enough for 1 Cuisinart counter-top ice cream maker. I have a Cuisinart Automatic Frozen Yogurt – Ice Cream & Sorbet Maker. If you have a regular ice cream freezer that uses salt and ice, you can double this recipe.

I always wished I could find mint chocolate chip ice cream *without* the chocolate chips, so I want to try making just the mint-flavored ice cream part of this recipe and see if it’s as good as I hoped!

This one is next on the menu. Silas was *just* asking me today if we could make mint chip. 🙂

Did this one last night and it was a hit! I think we’ll try plain mint, without the chips, next time … and there *will* be a next time. 🙂

I am making this for my daughter for her birthday since this is her favorite ice cream. I am using the mini choc chips & added just a touch of green food coloring for fun. The mix is in the fridge cooling. She is going to love this & I bet her kiddos will too if she shares with them. Thanks for sharing!

What do u mean by hald and half thank u
Tiffany says
Kathy, you can find half & half in the dairy section near the milk and cream. It is half milk and half cream.

This is the first time I was able to make homemade ice cream and not have it freeze hard as a rock when put in the freezer. My guess this is due to the sweetened condensed milk and the small amount of alcohol in the mint extract I used. I used my homemade sweetened condensed milk and whole milk instead of half and half. I also used some full fat yogurt(just a couple large spoons to use it up). Kalona Supernatural yogurt and milk make a great tasting ice cream. I will be making grasshopper ice cream for the holidays!!
Great recipe!!

Amy, I think it’s the sweetened condensed milk, along with the fat in the half and half/whole milk that makes it softer when frozen. I’m glad you liked it! I love ice cream and this is the easiest way to make it 🙂

Can I ask which model of ice cream maker you have? There’s a $300 one and a $90 one, I’m game either way, just want to know which one it is that you have because clearly you’ve had a great deal of success with it! Thanks!
Tiffany says
I’m pretty sure mine is the $90 one. It was actually even less than that I think, but that was a few years ago. It works great!
