The inspiration for these came from a Dairy Queen run the other week. We went for ice cream, but while we were there I noticed a sign advertising apple bbq hamburgers. I’m not sure what those are like, but it started my mind thinking about the combination of apple and bbq.
I like to keep things simple, so this is what I came up with. Three ingredients give a sweet, smokey flavor to the pork chops. You could use the sauce on chicken or burgers too.
And you could choose to grill the meat, cook it in the oven or use the slow cooker. I chose the oven, only because I ran out of time for the slow cooker and it was way too hot outside to grill (triple digits – whew!).
Apple BBQ Pork Chops
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup apple jelly
- 3/4 cup BBQ sauce
- 1-2 drops liquid smoke optional
- 3 lbs. pork chops
- salt and pepper
Instructions
- Warm the apple jelly in the microwave, just to melt it a bit.
- Stir apple jelly and bbq sauce together.
- Add liquid smoke, if using it.
- Sprinkle chops with salt and pepper.
- Cook on grill, basting with sauce. Or pour sauce over and bake covered at 350 degrees in the oven. Or place in slow cooker with sauce and cook on low 7-8 hours or high 5-6 hours.
Tiffany, this sounds great. I do a similar recipe for pork roast using apple jelly and ketchup with some chili powder. Never thought to use it on chops. Apple jelly is a bit difficult to find around here. Not every grocery store sells it. Thanks for sharing. Have a great week.
Oh Tiffany – what a fabulous creation you have here! I SOOO love apples with pork…and BBQ sauce too. I’m impressed. It looks mouth-watering.
I made these tonight and my family absolutely loved them! Thank you for the wonderful recipes 🙂
Can you sub in apple sauce or would it throw off the texture? Apple jelly is literally non-existent around here unless you make it yourself. This looks so good.
Rae, I think applesauce would work fine.
How long would you bake this in the oven?
Becky, 350 degrees for about an hour should do it.
This was delicious. The best pork chop I have ever made.
The BBQ pork chops sound great. If baking an hour, what temperature and covered or uncovered? Thanks!
350 degrees, covered.
Tiffany, I am trying a version of this in cooking a Christmas dinner for 70 Senior Citizens next week. VBC Youth group will be serving dinner to members of our local Sr Center featuring Apple BBQ Prok Chops. I use Sonny’s BBQ sauce, apple butter, and sliced apples cooked in the Crock Pot served over smoked pork chops. The menu will be completed with green beans, loaded baked potato casserole and either biscuits or yeast rolls (haven’t decided yet).
That sounds great! You are a great example of serving others! I know the Senior Citizens will have a great dinner, and I bet the youth will too.
I found your recipe through Menu Plan Monday at I’m an Organizing Junkie. These pork chops sound delicious! I have pinned them to my Pinterest board and will be trying them next week! Can’t wait!
Thanks! Hope you like them.
