Before we get to the main point of today’s Ingredient Spotlight, we need to pause for a geeky food blogger moment. If you’ve got no interest in cameras, lenses and don’t want to hear what happens when a camera gets dropped on a tile floor, keep scrolling for the recipe links.
On Monday, one of my children, who shall remain nameless, accidentally knocked my camera off the counter and onto the tile floor. I was upstairs when it happened. Jim came up and told me about the incident, but he thought the camera was fine since it still took pictures.
Problem was, that the lens would not focus or zoom. At all.
I paid a visit to the local camera shop and found out that the lens was ruined. It would cost too much to repair it. But, I was able to buy a 50mm lens for my Nikon D40 to replace it! I had written that off as a possibility, because they didn’t use to sell a 50mm for this camera. Apparently, the lens has only been available for a few months.
The photo at the top of this post was taken with the 50mm. All the lights were off in the kitchen and it was very dark and gray afternoon. With my kit lens, that situation would have yielded a horrible photo.
I will still need to use the Lowell lights I purchased a few months ago to get a decent amount of light. The photo in this post is still darker than I would like, but I can’t believe the difference the 50mm lens makes. I am not a great photographer. I still have so much to learn. But I think this new lens is going to help.
Now, let’s get to the oranges. They’re like a burst of sunshine. For the record, those are clementines in the photo, not oranges.
Here are a few of my recipes that use oranges or orange juice:
- Citrus Chex Buddies
- Gingerbread Bars with Orange Cream Cheese Frosting
- Ambrosia with a Twist of Lime
