I decided to make up a batch of homemade hot cocoa mix the other day. My mom always made this when my sister and I were little, but it had been a long time since I’d made any. I still have some Swiss Miss packets in the pantry, but the kids have been choosing this over the store-bought kind.
It’s really easy to make and you get a lot of mix with one batch. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 4 cups powdered milk
- 21.8 oz box Nestle’s Quik
- 16oz instant coffee creamer
- 1 cup powdered sugar
Mix all of this together in a big bowl. Pour back into the empty containers to store. To make a mug of cocoa, fill it with water or milk and heat in the microwave. Add 3-5 big spoons of mix to the cup and stir well.

I make this every winter! I leave a canister of it on the counter for the kids!

I used to make this and a friend make “Fireside Cocoa Mix” that has nutmeg and mini marshmallows in it. So yummy!
Amanda says
Oh, my kids would love it if I made this tonight! We’ve run out of our Swiss Miss and I think I have all the ingredients.
Thank you for sharing the recipe!

This is a perfect recipe for a chilly day like today! Thanks Tiffany!

I tried this with Vanilla Caramel creamer, but it tastes more Vanilla Caramel than chocolate. I think I would do half flavored, half plain next time.
Tiffany says
Vanilla Caramel sounds really good, maybe even better than chocolate. Great idea!
Ami says
Great recipe! I run my powdered milk through the food processor when I make this. I find that the mix dissolves better that way.
Tiffany says
That’s a great tip. Thanks for sharing!

I’ve been making this forever, except over the years we add two packages of dream whip and cinnamon
Kricket says
Oh wow! I never thought of adding Dream Whip or cinnamon but I have added a box of instant chocolate pudding, it makes it smoother and creamier.
I haven’t made this winters batch yet so I think I’ll try yours! Thanks!
Susan says
How many servings does this make??
Tiffany says
It really depends on how many hot cocoa lovers you have at your house but, I would say it should last the winter, it makes a ton! And don’t forget the candy cane stirrers, marshmallows and whipped topping too!

We have bought the nesquik and coffee creamer in bulk size. Can you tell me the exact measurements for those? Thanks!
Tiffany says
Here are the measurements –
4 cups powdered milk
21.8 oz box Nestle’s Quik – 4 heaping cups
16oz instant coffee creamer -almost 4¾ cups
1 cup powdered sugar
Hope that helps!

Can you tell me how many servings this recipe makes?
Rose Guerra says
Can you give me the measurements when making the actual drink for a crowd (30-40 servings), using this mix recipe?
Suzanne Collins says
Can I make it sugar-free thank you Suzanne
Tiffany King says
If you use sugar-free versions of all the ingredients, I think it would work.
Trisha says
Have you ever tried it with ovaltine, instead of nesquick?
Michele S. says
Tiffany, I was wondering if you have ever made the hot chocolate mix with the Dream Whip and cinnamon mixed in yet??
If so, I was wondering what the flavor tasted like????
Thank you so much for your help!!!
Tiffany King says
I’ve never made that one, but it sounds scrumptious!
Tina says
I also add malt!

This is a tradition in my family for the past 60 years. Thank you for some variations. They sound so yummy.
Deb says
My family enjoys variations of your hot chocolate mix: dark chocolate and peppermint. For the dark chocolate variation I add 1/4 cup of Hershey’s Special Dark Chocolate Cacao to the mix. For the peppermint variation I add one small bag of Brach’s peppermint candies that have been reduced to powder, with the food processor, to the mix.

Well…accidentally bought French Vanilla creamer…tried it. Too much French vanilla, so I added 1 cup non sweet cocoa. Much better. We use to call this “Snowmobile Hot Cocoa Mix” but it is the same. Thank you for posting this.
Amber says
Do ya know the nutrition label for 1 serving would be?

My exhusband use to make this and I lost the recipe. Then I found yours and it’s an exact same recipe I’m so happy I can let my children enjoy it. Thank you so very much I can’t wait to mix it up this weekend and surprise them.
