I decided to make up a batch of homemade hot cocoa mix the other day.  My mom always made this when my sister and I were little, but it had been a long time since I’d made any.  I still have some Swiss Miss packets in the pantry, but the kids have been choosing this over the store-bought kind.

It’s really easy to make and you get a lot of mix with one batch.  Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 4 cups powdered milk
  • 21.8 oz box Nestle’s Quik
  • 16oz instant coffee creamer
  • 1 cup powdered sugar

Mix all of this together in a big bowl.  Pour back into the empty containers to store.  To make a mug of cocoa, fill it with water or milk and heat in the microwave.  Add 3-5 big spoons of mix to the cup and stir well.

  1. Oh, my kids would love it if I made this tonight! We’ve run out of our Swiss Miss and I think I have all the ingredients.

Thank you for sharing the recipe!

  2. I tried this with Vanilla Caramel creamer, but it tastes more Vanilla Caramel than chocolate. I think I would do half flavored, half plain next time.

  3. Great recipe! I run my powdered milk through the food processor when I make this. I find that the mix dissolves better that way.

    1. Oh wow! I never thought of adding Dream Whip or cinnamon but I have added a box of instant chocolate pudding, it makes it smoother and creamier.
I haven’t made this winters batch yet so I think I’ll try yours! Thanks!

    1. It really depends on how many hot cocoa lovers you have at your house but, I would say it should last the winter, it makes a ton! And don’t forget the candy cane stirrers, marshmallows and whipped topping too!

    1. Here are the measurements –
      4 cups powdered milk
      21.8 oz box Nestle’s Quik – 4 heaping cups
16oz instant coffee creamer -almost 4¾ cups
      1 cup powdered sugar

      Hope that helps!

  4. Can you give me the measurements when making the actual drink for a crowd (30-40 servings), using this mix recipe?

  5. Tiffany, I was wondering if you have ever made the hot chocolate mix with the Dream Whip and cinnamon mixed in yet??

If so, I was wondering what the flavor tasted like????

Thank you so much for your help!!!

  6. My family enjoys variations of your hot chocolate mix: dark chocolate and peppermint. For the dark chocolate variation I add 1/4 cup of Hershey’s Special Dark Chocolate Cacao to the mix. For the peppermint variation I add one small bag of Brach’s peppermint candies that have been reduced to powder, with the food processor, to the mix.

  7. Well…accidentally bought French Vanilla creamer…tried it. Too much French vanilla, so I added 1 cup non sweet cocoa. Much better. We use to call this “Snowmobile Hot Cocoa Mix” but it is the same. Thank you for posting this.

  8. My exhusband use to make this and I lost the recipe. Then I found yours and it’s an exact same recipe I’m so happy I can let my children enjoy it. Thank you so very much I can’t wait to mix it up this weekend and surprise them.
