When I was little, I remember celebrating Christmas Eve at my Aunt and Uncle’s house. Â The food was always pitch-in style, with everyone bringing something. Â One thing that showed up year after year was tuna melt sandwiches.
It seems like such a simple thing to have on Christmas Eve, but it fit in just fine with the hot sub sandwiches and other fun snack foods that were shared. Â And the tuna melts became part of Christmas Eve for me, just because they showed up for several years in a row. Â
Isn’t there a saying about how most of life is just showing up? Â I guess it’s just as true for tuna melts as for people.
This is not the same recipe that my mom made when I was little. Â I decided to use cheddar instead of Velveeta. Â And I threw in some Kraft Mayonnaise instead of the butter that mom used. Â
Mom always made them on hamburger buns. Â I found some slider buns at the store. Â They were the perfect size to serve with soup.
Right now, you can get some coupons to use on Kraft Mayonnaise and Kraft cheese. Â You can save up to $20 and the coupons are only redeemable at Target stores. Â Saving money makes these little tuna melts an even better deal!
Here’s what you’ll need to make them:
This is more method than actual recipe. Â Adjust the ingredients to suit your taste.
- 2 cans tuna packed in water
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- hamburger buns or slider buns
- Drain the tuna.
- Stir tuna, cheese and mayo together in a bowl.
- Spread on buns.
- Toast under the broiler in the oven for several minutes until the cheese is melty and bread looks toasty.
- Serve with soup, salad or as a snack.

This sounds yummy – I love all kinds of melts. And… as much as I like to use real ingredients, such as real cheddar cheese, this just begs for Velveeta. ; )
Mrs. K, it kind of does beg for Velveeta, doesn’t it? 🙂
I purchased my bosch last January and it is wonderful. It is quiet and always cleans the dishes really well. congrats on the new dishwasher.
I found out they’re installing it Thursday! I’m so happy to have it before Christmas 🙂
