Part of my family is heading to Disney World in a couple weeks. Because I’m in the group going, I can’t seem to stay away from the Disney stuff. That means I’ve been avidly reading the Disney Food Blog. Disney and food are two of my favorite things.
The other day, I ran across this review of a new sandwich found in Animal Kingdom. I knew I had to try to create this! Of course, I have no idea what it tastes like, other than the way it is described in the post. Maybe I’ll get to sample the real deal while I’m there, so I can compare my version and Disney’s.
However, I have to say that the review was a great inspiration. My version turned out full of flavor and tender. My family loved it too. And the fact that it uses the slow cooker is a bonus. There’s just enough spice to make it interesting and give the meat a lot of flavor, yet it’s not burn-your-tongue hot.
Here’s what you’ll need to make these sandwiches:
African Pulled Beef Sandwiches in the Slow Cooker with Yogurt-Mint Sauce
Ingredients
- 2-3 lb. chuck roast
- 3-5 cloves garlic 1 whole and peeled, others crushed
- 1 tsp. cumin
- 1/2 tsp. ground red pepper cayenne
- 1/4 tsp. allspice
- 1 onion diced
- 1 jalepeno seeds removed and diced
- 15 oz can petite diced tomatoes
For the sauce
- 10 oz Greek yogurt
- 1 large cucumber peeled and diced
- 1/2 tsp. dried mint
- Pita bread
Instructions
- Cut one garlic clove in half and rub roast all over with it.
- Place roast and whole garlic clove in slow cooker.
- Add remaining ingredients (except for sauce) to the slow cooker, sprinkling spices directly on meat.
- Cover and cook on high 5-6 hours or low 7-8 hours.
- Remove meat from crock and shred with a fork.
- Return meat to the crock and stir to combine with juices from cooking the meat.
- Stir yogurt, cucumber and mint together.
- Serve meat in pita bread with yogurt sauce.

Made this for dinner tonight – tasty!
My hubby chopped a rather large jalepeno, so it was a bit more spicy than I’d prefer, but still very good! Thanks for the recipe!!!

Oh how I am ready to go back to Disney. We were there in March and we had a very good time.

We just got back from Walt Disney World and all I’ve been able to do is think about that delicious pulled beef sandwich I had at the Tamu Tamu quick serve in Animal Kingdom. As soon as we came home, I began my online search for the recipe and ran across this one. Although it is quite tasty, it does not taste a thing like the sandwich I was searching for. Thanks for the effort, as it is a tasty meal, but not the one I was looking for.

Stephanie, I’m so glad you posted. When we were in Disney World in May I didn’t get to try the sandwich. I’ve actually never had it before. I was just inspired by the description. Maybe I’ll get to try it some day and tweak my recipe to come closer. One thing I did get to try was the Nutella and Fruit waffles in Magic Kingdom and those do taste very close to the ones I made. I {heart} Disney and Disney food too 🙂

This sandwich looks so tasty! Way to spice up a normal pulled pork sandwich =)

I just visited Disney and I would have to say the african beef sandwich was the BEST meal we had during out vacation. I think there may have also been fresh lettuce and tomato in the pita bread. Can’t wait to try this.

This recipe is quite tasty and one of my favorites to make for an easy dinner. Though I have to say, the beef will come out incredibly watery and under salted. While shredding the beef, I highly suggest seasoning it with salt and pepper to taste, then place it back in the pot and leaving the lid off for another half hour on high or a whole hour on low (also helps tendering up the beef more if the cut of chuck beef was a little too sinewy and hard to shred). This is also one of those recipes that keeps very well and will taste the same, if not better, after a couple of hours in the fridge.

This looks delicious, but I’m quite allergic to cucumbers. Anyone have substitution ideas in sauces like this?
Tiffany says
Lynette, you could make it just with the yogurt and mint.

Thank you so much for this recipe! I wanted to try this on our last trip but didn’t and was so bummed to see it’s now gone from the menu! Can’t wait to try it!

Loved this! Picked up mysterious package of good looking meat (bane of my Canadian existence – the packaging is never clear AND I READ ABOUT FOOD ALL DAY. Rant over.) and prayed for the best.
At eight hours the meat was still tough and the sauce was too spicy, two hours later the meat was perfect and the spice had mellowed alot. Loved it! Thanks for posting will definitely make it again.
