The Versatility of a Menu Plan

I have recently discovered that my menu plans (probably most menu plans) are extremely versatile.  Yes, I’m a little slow at catching on.

I didn’t use to use my own menu plans and grocery lists very often.  I’m always cooking new things to share on the blog, so it didn’t make sense to print off a menu and list for meals I knew I probably wouldn’t make.

Then life got {even} busier.  So I printed off a menu and list, shopped and hung the list of meals on my fridge.  I made a few of them as written.  The rest of our meals  I created to share here with you.

What I found out is even when I don’t make the meals as planned, the grocery list still works. The reason is that almost all of my meals use common ingredients.  The list makes sure I’m keeping my pantry and freezer stocked with foods that can be used to make many different meals.

Win-win!  I don’t have to do any planning and I still have the freedom to change things up.  If you see me in the grocery now, I’ll have a printed list in my hands.

If you’re in a habit of shopping without a list or spending a lot of time creating a list, you might try printing this one.  Maybe you’ll find freedom in the plan too!

Here’s what is on the menu today:

Olive Oil and Italian Herb Roasted Chicken, Roasted Carrots and Parsnips, green veggie

Ravioli in the Slow cooker, salad

Croque Monsieur (Ham and Cheese), salad

Italian Beef Sandwiches in the Slow Cooker, French fries, carrot sticks

January is nearly over.  I didn’t make any resolutions, but we did  change things up in our homeschooling for second semester.  We switched co-ops and changed some of the curriculum too.  So far, it’s all going much smoother for us.  A month into it and I can say the changes were for the better.

What about you?  Did you make any resolutions or are you working on new habits this year?

Maybe eating at home more often is something you’re working on.  If so, you’ll like this menu.  It’s got some of my favorite recipes on it and they’re all easy to make.

Yesterday, my oldest child turned 20.  How is that possible?  Wasn’t it just yesterday that she was toddling down the hall in a pair of high heels and a onesie?

Today marks the day that I married Jim.  And he married me.  24 years ago.

I married him when I was 12.

Just kidding.  Really I was 20.  The same age my daughter is now.  Oh my goodness.

Enough of this time-flying stuff.  Let’s talk about food…

The menu this week includes a whole chicken in the slow cooker.  Buy a big one and you’ll have enough leftover to make the Italian Chicken and Rice Casserole.

Happy New Year!

There’s something about January that is a perfect clean start.  Even the process of taking Christmas decorations down and having less clutter and more space gives me a boost of much needed energy.

After all the chocolate and late nights and days spent in pj’s playing board games, I’m ready to get back to a routine.  I just hope the routine continues to include chocolate.  That’s about as far as my resolutions go.

If you’re ready for a routine again too that includes cooking at home, I’ve got some help for you!

First, I have a free eBook of My Favorite Slow Cooker Meals to give to everyone who subscribes to Eat at Home by email.  You can choose either daily or weekly updates.  Either way, the link to download the free eBook will be sent to you.

You might also want to check out all the other free menus and grocery lists available.  There are 112 to choose from!  And if you like to plan your own menu, I’ve got a cute printable planner with space for a grocery list too.
