Ingredient Spotlight: Fresh Herbs

Do you grow your own herbs?

I don’t have much of a green thumb, but I do like to try to grow herbs.  Right now I only have basil and chives, but in the past we’ve had parsley, cilantro, thyme, rosemary, mint and lavender.

Basil is my favorite to cook with.  I love to walk out to the garden boxes and gather a handful while the pasta boils.  Small pleasure.

Here are a few of my recipes that use fresh herbs:

I can’t wait to see your recipes! Link up any recipe on your blog that uses fresh herbs.  It doesn’t have to be a recent post, just be sure to link directly to your recipe, not just the main page of your blog.  I only ask that you include a link back to Eat at Home in your post. You can link directly to this post or use the button in the sidebar.

  1. I was just weeding my garden last night. I only have herbs in it. I planted mint last year, and well it takes over. I pulled it all, knowing if I need some more it will be growing back in a bit, and my mom has tons taking over her front yard. I also am growing garlic you can just plant a clove to get this going. We have rosemary that I’ve done nothing with! And basil that I had to cut back last night.

Here’s some recipes that I use the mint for:

  2. We are waiting for our basil to come up in our garden this year… oh, I’m excited to make more pesto!!

  3. Grilling season is here, so I posted a yummy recipe for Greek chicken that uses rosemary, thyme, and oregano. :)

  4. Lots of herbs here, although we are on our almost 3d week of record 98+ temperatures and no rain, so the garden is kind of on life support now. I have basil, thyme, oregano, germander, hyssop, lemon balm, several different kinds of mint (including chocolate mint, which is so yummy in pound cake!). I posted a recipe for a couscous salad that uses basil and mint.

I’m a newby at “linking up” so I hope I did it properly.

  5. Although I love to cook with them, my green thumb is so black that even herbs don’t do well for me. Very sad when you live on 25 acres. I just buy them at a produce stand or the grocery store. Today I bring Thyme Enough Casserole, a versatile dish that is great for potlucks. Sorry, haven’t made this recently so no pic. Thanks for hosting, Tiffany.

  6. I love having an herb garden. I have 3 year old rosemary and parsley (flat-leaf) and just this morning, I planted a new basil plant and some chives!

  7. I think the only garden we’ll manage this year is an herb garden! Thanks for reminding me, I need to at least get some basil going! I could practically live on basil during the summer… cilantro, too, but it’s hard to grow for long. was asking about cooking blogs today — I commented on yours, so maybe you’ll have some new folks wander this way!

  8. I grow several of my own herbs… My favorite is also basil . I plant my basil next to all the doors in my home.. Mosquitoes are repelled by Basil… a 2 in one herb.. natural bug repellent and great taste 😉
