Oh goodness! This one is a winner.
The boy people (and man person, too) who live in this house really loved this meal. It was a fight-over-the-leftovers kind of love.
I don’t blame them either. I loved it too.
Generally, I’m against taking time to brown meat before tossing it in the slow cooker. But in a few cases, it’s a step not to be skipped. This is one of those cases. It only takes a few extra minutes and the results are so worth the effort.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Cube Steaks and Gravy in the Slow Cooker
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup flour
- 2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp. dry ground mustard
- 2 lbs. cube steak
- 2 Tbs. vegetable oil
- 1 onion sliced
- 1 packet brown gravy mix
- 1 cup water
Instructions
- Stir flour, salt, garlic powder and ground mustard together in a bowl.
- Dredge cube steaks in flour.
- Brown in skillet in vegetable oil.
- Remove and place steaks in crockpot.
- Add onion to skillet and cook a few minutes.
- Stir gravy mix and water together. Pour into skillet, scraping up the browned bits.
- Pour gravy and onions over meat in crockpot.
- Cook on low 7-8 hours or high 5-6 hours.

This looks like it would be good with some venison steaks I have in the freezer. I just got a dutch oven for my birthday and I love it as you can brown the meat and then “slow cook” it in the oven on a lower temp. So I might adapt this for the dutch oven.
Love your website!

It looks good except for the packaged brown gravy which tastes like paste. Awful. Instead of using this, add a little soy sauce for flavor & brown color. When everything is done, use the liquid & add a little cornstarch to thicken it. It will taste so much better.
If you like the packaged stuff then you can ignore this post.

Much better GF to if you eliminate the flour and use cornstarch

I’m having no luck when trying to print the recipe. It prints the title but the rest of the page is blank. Any ideas or what I’m doing wrong??
Tiffany says
Audrey, there’s a print button just above the recipe. It’s right above the “save recipe” button. That should work to print the recipe. Sorry for the trouble you’re having.

Any idea about how much would be in the brown gravy packet? It is so expensive to buy this way – I buy it loose from the bulk food store but not sure how much to use. I love this recipe because I have a 2-part slow cooker and can brown the meat and onions in the pot on the stovetop and then place on the heating tray. Don’t have to dirty a second skillet. Yeah!!! One less to wash.
Tiffany says
Carol, I haven’t measured it, but I would guess it’s 2-3 Tbs.

GOOD BUT YOU YOU LEFT OUT ONE INGREDIENT WHICH IS 1/2 TO 3/4 MARSALA WINE
sharon says
this recipe can also use white pepper gravy mix (my favorite, w/out onions, allergy) very tasty

Do you still use the mustard powder or leave it out?

You can use the Liptons Onion soup mix instead of the brown gravy mix. Thats what I use when making cube steak and gravy on top of the stove. Is yummy!
Joslyn Losorelli says
Do you just throw out the remainder of the flour mixture after you’ve dredged the cube steak in it or is it added to the gravy?
Tiffany says
Joslyn, I throw out the remainder of the flour.
Crystal Petty says
Do the steaks have to be completely done before adding them to the crockpot? Thanks!
Tiffany says
Crystal, no they don’t need to be fully cooked. They’ll finish in the crockpot.

The Cube Steaks with Gravy recipe, I was wondering if it would work using a can of Campbell’s beef gravy instead of a packaged gravy.
Tiffany says
Jan, I’m sure that would work fine. Use what you’ve got!

Our family has been eating venison for years and we love it. I am always looking for new recipes to try. I tried this one for a Sunday family dinner using another commenters tip to use a touch of soy sauce and cornstarch instead of the packaged gravy mix. I added the soy sauce to the onions as in was sautating them and then after removing everything from the crockpot added some cornstarch to thicken the gravy. This meat was so tender it was falling apart as I was picking it up. My husband and son said this was the best venison they have ever had!! Best compliment they could have given me, thank you for this recipe. 🙂

I fix my almost like this.. I’m going have to try my using this …

wanted to check on using cornstarch instead of flour and it led me here. Thanks, and for me, I use a can of french onion soup and a can of cream of mushroom in the crock pot with added water, great gravy….delish !!
Tiffany says
That’s the way my mom always does it too. So good!
Christina Gehring says
How could you do this in the instant pot?
Delores Haynes says
Can I add canned mushrooms to this before I put it in the crock pot?
