Hamburger Stroganoff

I have a LOT on my plate during any given day:

  • Taking care of my kids: 23mo boy and 3.5yo girl
  • Working on my school work as I attempt to complete a two-year Masters degree program in one-year
  • Homeschooling my advanced preschooler
  • Blogging encouragement to women
  • Attempting to keep my house clean and my husband fed

By the time dinner rolls around, I’m pretty beat. I don’t want to spend much time in the kitchen at the end of a tiring day, and yet I don’t want to pay a hefty price for carry-out food. My solution? Quick, easy, and inexpensive pantry meals.

The hamburger stroganoff recipe I want to share with you today takes me at most 10 minutes to prepare from start to finish. And, the total cost for this meal is under $5 without any coupons (all the ingredients were purchased at Aldi).

Ingredients:
1lb of browned and seasoned burger = $1.89
(I brown most of my burger when I buy it, seasoning it and freezing it in 1lb increments.)
1 can of cream of mushroom soup = $.59
1 container of sour cream = $.89
1 pkg of egg noodles = $.99

Quick and Easy Steps:

  1. Set water to boil in a large pot.
  2. Microwave meat (can take straight from the freezer) until hot (approximately five minutes).
  3. Add noodles to boiling water and cook according to package.
  4. Add can of soup and container of sour cream to meat and heat one minute in microwave.
  5. Drain noodles and return to pot – add creamy meat mixture.
  6. Mix and serve.

  1. I love this recipe and we use almost the exact same one quite frequently in our house too (sometimes Hubby complains “almost too much,” lol). Mmmmm. I add onions when browning the meat and canned mushrooms to the end mixture. Tasty!

    • The addition of canned mushrooms would add an extra “yumminess” factor! :) I usually use onion powder and/or salt on my meat, along with garlic salt and other seasonings, when I brown it. I have to be careful about serving this dish too much, too. :)

  3. I’ve been a lurker for awhile (we’re having crockpot chicken tacos for dinner!) and this is one of my all-time favorite comfort foods! My mom used to make it exactly like this (well, except for the microwave part) and I still love it. I got a little fancy a few years ago and started trying some other stroganoff recipes, but I kept coming back to this one. Now I don’t mess with perfection!   4. I have made a similar recipe many times. I made beef stroganoff once the usual way, with strips of beef. My son didn’t like it, he asked me to make it the “real way with hamburger next time” :-)

    • Definitely! If he’s able to boil water and brown meat, he’ll have NO problem making this dish. Hmm, maybe I should teach this one to my husband to add a little variety to his skill set. Box mac’n’cheese can get old… :)

  7. I serve my kids food on those same plates! Just the right size and not as hard to wash as plastic which collects grease.

  8. Hi , I made this tonight! It is right up my alley & I loved it! Inexpensive , quick, easy, & tastes great. However, my family is spoiled (I think) :) well , I know! Anyway, I was adding the sour cream & I noticed your container that you list is only 89cents????? That led me to believe that it must be a very small container of sour cream?? Where I live it is over $2.00 for a pint so I only put half of my container in??? Not sure but they thought it was to much sour cream but then I added lil bit of ketchup so it gave it a bit of zip. I really really don’t cook well AT ALL! So that was the only thing I knew how to do??? I enjoyed every bit about this recipe & I appreciate all and any of your help. Thank you so much,

    • Lynn, the hamburger stroganoff is a guest post and I’ve actually not made it. From the photo it looks like a 16 oz container of sour cream, but that would cost more than 89 cents unless she got it on sale. I’ll have to direct her back to the comments here to answer your question. But it sounds like you fixed it and everyone liked so you can’t be the worst cook in the world! Great job tweaking the recipe for your family’s taste.

    • I buy my sour cream at Aldi. It’s a full tub (though you can use less – I’ve used as little as 8oz or so in the past), but it usually costs less than a dollar, unlike the tubs at the regular grocery store.

      I’m all about changing up recipes to work w/ the ingredients I have on hand – I rarely follow a recipe to the letter (unless I’m baking). Great modification w/ the ketchup! :)

  9. Just in case someone finds this 3 years later like I did – if you don’t have salt issues, add a package of Lipton Dry onion soup to the hamburger while it’s browning. I bet you could also add it to the noodles while they are boiling if you prebrowned your hamburger.
