I like keeping these seasoned and herb salts on hand to cook with.  I’ve shared the recipe for homemade seasoned salt before.  This version makes a larger batch and is tweaked just a bit.

Use the seasoned salt just like you would any other seasoned salt.  I like using it in pasta dishes, on grilled meats and even on zucchini.

Homemade Italian Seasoned Salt

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Kosher salt
  • 4 Tbs. oregano
  • 4 Tbs. basil
  • 4 Tbs. thyme
  • 1 Tbs. crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 Tbs. fresh ground black pepper

Instructions

  • Stir all ingredients together.
  • Makes 2 jars, 1/2 pint each.

This Italian Herb Salt is wonderful for adding zest to chicken.  Also, try it on fish and vegetables or a pinch on your salad.  But remember – it is a salt.  Use it in place of regular salt in a recipe.  It isn’t good on bread.  Trust me, I’ve tried.  If you want Italian seasoning blend to sprinkle on pizzas and bread, leave the salt out of this recipe and double the herbs.

      1. I found those exact jars at our local True Value hardware store.
There’s also a 4oz version which I might use instead. The 1/2 pint seems like a lot of salt! I plan to make 4 or 5 different kinds and give them as sets.

  1. These are great! We usually gifts in a jar on the sweet side (cookie or brownie mixes, etc) But these savory ones are perfect for those who don’t really bake. Plus, since they’re spices, they can be used in lots of cooking.

Thanks for sharing…oh, and I have to agree, those jars are super cute 😀

  2. I love these mixes….and the jars……but I especially love the short round measuring spoon! Where can I get them? My mother has been wanting some without the long handles!

    Thanks for sharing!!
