Using a slow cooker can really simplify your Thanksgiving dinner (or any other meal, for that matter).  It allows you to prep a dish earlier in the day and it frees up the oven for other things.

Sweet potatoes and apples make a delicious side dish.  They cook wonderfully in the slow cooker, with a sweet, cinnamon spiced syrup.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 3 sweet potatoes
  • 4 small apples
  • 1/4 cup apple juice (not in photo)
  • 2 Tbs. brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • dash nutmeg
  • 1-2 additional Tbs. apple juice
  • 1 tsp. cornstarch

Clean, peel and chop the apples and sweet potatoes.  Put them in the crock of the slow cooker.  Stir the 1/4 apple juice, brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg together.  Pour over the apples and sweet potatoes, stirring to coat.  Cook on high for about 3 hours.

Stir 1-2 Tbs. apple juice with 1 tsp. cornstarch.  Stir into the sweet potatoes and apples in the slow cooker.  Let it cook for another couple minutes then serve.

  1. This is actually my son’s favorite baby food combo! What size slow cooker are you using for this recipe?

Thanks for all of the great posts!

    Sarah

  2. Going to try this. It looks so good. Will add a pack of cran/raisins the last hour. Should be really good. What do you think?

  3. This was terrific! Everyone loved it.
A suggestion for you is to repeat the size if crock pot in each recipe as there are many sizes to be used. (And for someone who can’t quite judge it on their own, it would help.)
    Thanks for all you do.

      1. Cut up potatoes night before, but put them in a container with water, they stayed fresh, and perfect. Save Apple’s for same day, they’re much easier!

    1. Whatever type you already have is usually my preference! Sweet ones seem to pair well with the potatoes, but a tart granny smith just might give it a little kick too. 🙂

    1. I used a 6-quart slow cooker for this recipe, so with a 2-quart you’ll want to reduce this recipe to 1/3 or maybe 1/2 of the ingredients listed. As far as cook times, I would start checking it at about 1 1/2 hours and every 15-30 minutes after that and just make note of the final time for when you make this recipe again. I’d love to know how this works out for you too!

  4. This was delicious! A lot of the yam/apple recipes out there use way too much sugar and butter; this one was perfect, and yet the apples still taste like apple pie filling.
