Have you ever had a brownie craving, but missing ingredients to make them and only cake mix on hand instead of brownie mix? I think you’re going to love this recipe from Kim. She uses a cake mix to make some deeply chocolate brownies that are studded with Heath toffee bits!
I love Heath candy bars and I love brownies, so it was only natural that I put the two together! Since I also adore quick and easy recipes, this dessert only requires 4 ingredients.
If you are not a fan of toffee, you can easily substitute your favorite candy or chocolate chips. I’ve made these with mini peanut butter cups, Rolo candies, chocolate chips, and white chocolate chips! What can I say, they are so easy to whip up, and there are so many possibilities!
They may not be the most photogenic dessert, but disappear quickly every time I make them! Also, this recipe contains no eggs, so it’s great for anyone with an egg allergy or who doesn’t eat eggs, and with so few ingredients it’s a great “first” recipe for kids. My children enjoy getting in the kitchen and baking up goodies, and this is the perfect rainy day activity (with the added bonus of getting my chocolate fix!)
Toffee Brownies {4-Ingredients}
Ingredients
- 1 box of chocolate cake mix
- 1 box of instant chocolate pudding mix 4 serving size
- 1 3/4 cups milk
- 1 1/2 cups Heath Toffee Bits or desired candy/chips
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Grease/spray a 9 x 13 baking dish. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine milk and pudding mix. Whisk together until pudding begins to thicken.
- Add dry cake mix. Stir until combined.
- Spread batter into prepared baking dish.
- Top with toffee bits.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes.
- Remove from oven and allow to cool - melted toffee is HOT!
- Cut into squares and serve.
*Note: I have vanilla pudding pictured with the ingredients, and chocolate pudding listed in the recipe. I usually use chocolate pudding, but you can substitute different flavors. You can also add additional chocolate chips or toffee bits to the batter if desired. You really can’t have too much chocolate in my opinion!

These sound soooo good. I have been visiting the Heath toffee pieces every time I grocery shop but haven’t bought them yet. Now I can! Thanks for sharing.

I made this with mini M & Ms (it’s what I had on hand) and I broke chocolate chip cookie dough pieces up & put that on top (I had bought some cookie dough & didn’t get around to making the cookies, and this just sounded like a better idea for cookie dough). Thanks for this recipe!

We do not buy mixes at our house. So I was wondering how I could make this with my regular cake recipe? Please help!!!!!!!!!!
Karen says
Hi, just make your regular, homemade cake & add the English toffee bits. 😊
Natalie says
Can you use brownie mix instead?
Tiffany says
Natalie – I’m sure you could. I would just bake the brownies like the mix instructs, and stir the toffee chips into the batter. No need to add the pudding mix either.

Last week I made a boxed truffle brownie mix I had on hand & as soon as I took them out of the oven I sprinkled the toffee bits on top & then put them back in the oven for a minute or two to melt the chocolate a little bit. They were delicious!

I’m baking them as I type, I used a dark fudge brownie mid. We will see how it turns out

I sprinkle chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, and chopped walnuts after pouring in pan and before baking. Then I use the bottom end of a glass to slightly sink them into the batter. Heavenly!

Can you sub in Almond milk??
Tiffany King says
I think that would work, but I’ve not tried it.
Barb Dowell says
You can’t use Almond milk to make pudding. It won’t thicken.

Did not like these at all. Did not have the consistency of a brownie. All I could taste was the artificial flavor from the instant pudding. Definitely will not make again
Melissa says
Made these twice and both times it took way longer to bake than the 25-30 mins. Middle was still very running and edges were burnt. What am I doing wrong??
Sally Lou says
Made for company, baking 30 minutes in a Pyrex pan. Rich and gooey deliciousness that everyone loved. Now I want to try other combinations!
Barbara says
Are these the consistency of a cake brownie? Or does the pudding make them more like chewy brownies?
