These are so, very good.  Of course, anything topped with cream cheese frosting is delicious.  An online friend shared the recipe with me.  I’m not sure where she found it.  She says that it freezes well too, which is nice because it makes a big pan.  My family had no trouble eating them all though.

Here’s what you’ll need:

See that can of baking powder?  Ignore that.  I grabbed the wrong ingredient.  You’re really going to need baking soda.

  • 1 stick butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 2 mashed bananas

Cream the butter and sugar in a mixer bowl.  Add the eggs, sour cream and vanilla.  Stir the baking soda and salt into the flour, then add the dry ingredients to the wet.  Mix well.  Add in the bananas.  Spread into a greased 10″x15″ pan.  Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.  Cool completely before frosting.

For the frosting you’ll need:

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 stick butter, softened
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 3/4 cup powdered sugar

In a mixer bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter together.  Add in the vanilla.  Gradually mix in the powdered sugar until it reaches a spreadable consistency.  Spread on the cooled banana bars.  Store the bars in the refrigerator.

  1. Looks yummy and different use for those brownish bananas! I’m pretty sure my kids will revolt if I make banana bread again this year! lol

  2. I made these today for a church event and they were a huge hit. I love them too! I only used about 2/3 of the frosting on mine and they were fine. I stuck the rest in the fridge for another time. Thanks for the yummy recipe!

  3. I have to make this for my husband. Have you seen those little banana cakes individually wrapped called Nemo’s…you buy them at convenience places like Circle K? He loves those, and I’ll bet this is much much better.

  4. i was about to make this. but i dont have cream cheese in the house! i might make a buttercream icing instead with it.

  5. I made this about a month ago for us and some friends. We all thought it was wonderful! I also added some chopped walnuts to the batter.

  6. LOVE the looks of this recipe! And the fact that there is sour cream in it makes me even happier!!!! – I honestly believe that any banana recipe with sour cream always tastes AMAZING! And then of course add that d’lish cream cheese frosting and wowsers! Once again thank you for such a great recipe Tiffany!

  7. The recipe calls for ‘baking soda’ and the picture shows ‘baking powder’….mines in the oven right now and I’ll be pissed if I just wasted a ton of ingredients and $$ if this was a typo / not corrected / neglecent.

    1. If you look at the post, you’ll see that I included two photos and a note saying that you’ll need baking soda instead of powder. The recipe is correct. I hope you enjoyed the banana bars. They’re one of my favorites 🙂

  8. I just read the comments on this recipe post. I hope and pray that you ignored the comments that were so critical!
I don’t understand why they felt like they had to criticize you. (Especially Phyllis Heim)

Thank you so much for posting this recipe!!
    I truly appreciate it!! 😋

I haven’t tried it yet, but it sounds so yummy!
