Apple Brownies

Despite the name, this dessert has no chocolate in it.  It is the texture of brownies, with a dense center studded with apples and a crisp top.  The cinnamon apple flavor is so good, especially warm.  And the ingredients are items I almost always have on hand.

The recipe was shared with me by Magistra, on a forum I frequent.  I followed her recipe, but only made a half batch instead of whole.  Double this recipe if you’d like a 9×13 pan of Apple Brownies.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 stick butter, melted
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 – 1 1/2 cups chopped apple (I used 2 apples)
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, optional
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 Tbs. cinnamon

Grease a 9″ square baking pan.  In a large bowl, beat the melted butter, sugar and eggs.  Stir in the apples and nuts.  Mix in the dry ingredients and pour into the pan.  Bake at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes.

  1. I think I may be making these Apple Brownies since my 3 boys are home from basketball today due to colds/coughs and fevers. Hubby and I were going to go out to dinner tonight but we aren’t feeling 100% either. These will be a good dessert tonight! I might double it and use whole wheat pastry flour or white whole wheat.

  4. I just made this a “snow” snack and they were fantastic! Warm and gooey out of the oven, but not to dry when they had cooled off either. Thanks for sharing a total winner!

  5. Nicole – Have fun with the basketball tournament. My son played this morning. They lost, but had fun. The score was something like 7 to 45. Not kidding!

    Misc Jenn – Apple Brownies would be a perfect snow snack. We’re supposed to be getting more snow Sunday/Monday.

  6. We are eating these now! And WOW! They are really good! Here’s what I modified: 100% whole wheat pastry flour, almost a full cup of Rapunzel Whole Cane Sugar (the rest of the cup was regular refined cane sugar) and I added 2T of maple syrup. I normally bake with honey in place of sugar EVERY time, but today for some reason I forgot. I will try with half honey and half Rapunzel next time. Then I normally have to adjust and add flour or reduce liquid.

    I didn’t double the recipe and wish I had but I wouldn’t have wanted to peel and chop more than 2 apples! My oldest just asked, “Did you put a lot of sugar in this?” He was wanting to know if he could have thirds, but when I told him I did (even ratio of sugar to flour is a lot of sugar to me! :) ), he said, “I probably shouldn’t have thirds then?” I said no, but he’ll have some tomorrow, if he’s feeling up to it. That is if my hubby and I don’t finish it tonight! (I’m going to send you a picture. :) )

    As for sickness, we are all a little queasy with some digestive issues going on here.

    As for snow, you must be just a bit south of me as we are getting it again on Tuesday. I’m in Downingtown, PA, 45 min west of Philly and 45 min east of Lancaster (Amish Country).

  7. I discovered your website last week and feel in love with it! I looked at it for a very long time and printed a bunch of yummy recipes to try. Then I lost it!! I’ve spent almost 3 days googling for you! But hooray I have found you again! Your website is wonderful for moms. Your recipes don’t seem to be to over powering in time or flavor, which can make it hard to get my kids to eat! So I am book marking this and will be back often!   9. I just noticed these are in your freezer week. Are these freezable? I was thinking about freezing mine from Saturday, but was unsure about freezing with apples in them.

    • LadyLep, I actually don’t know how they would freeze. I probably should have chosen a dessert that does freeze well. I just chose these because they were a recent dessert. If you try to freeze them, let me know how it works. We rarely have enough dessert leftover to freeze any. I’d have to hide it from my kids :-)

  11. I just froze one as I had one left over from last Saturday. I’ll let it freeze for a day or two, then thaw and eat. :) I’ll let you know how it is.

    I forgot to let you know until now. But it still tasted great frozen. It wasn’t super hard after a few days in the freezer so I just ate it frozen! Yummy! My kids have been asking when I can make these again. But I still have some of your banana chocolate chip cookies (but carob chips) in the freezer (I think).
