Stay Sharp! – How to Keep Your Knife Honed (and Rada Cutlery Winner)

It was so fun to read about your knives in the comments for the Rada Cutlery giveaway.  I was a little surprised at how many of you lack sharp knives.   Some of you are carving turkeys with steak knives!

Sharp knives are essential for making dinner quickly, so I thought I’d share some tips for keeping your cutlery sharp.  I’m no expert.  These are ideas I’ve picked up over the years.

1. Start with a good knife – If you don’t have one then get thee to the Rada Kitchen Store.  I recommend the Cook’s Knife.  It’s only $9.20.  That’s less money than it takes to feed your family one meal at a fast food restaurant.  And having a sharp knife will speed your cooking so you’ll be less inclined to grab something quick on busy nights.

You will not regret buying this knife.  It’s so affordable, there’s no reason to keep using your dull knives.

2. Use a cutting board that won’t dull your knife. Wood, bamboo and plastic are all reliable choices. 

3. Scrape with the back of the knife. If you’re scraping food off the cutting board, into the pan, don’t use the blade.  Push the food with the back of the knife.

4. Get a sharpener and use it. No knife will hold a sharp edge forever, but if it’s a good knife it will take an edge. Give it a quick sharpen every couple of weeks or when it feels dull.  Rada sells a knife sharpener for $6.90.

5. Hand wash your knives. Dishwashers are tough on knives.  The blades can bump other items and become damaged.  Give your knives a quick wash by hand.  It only takes a minute.

    My Rada knives were put thru the dishwasher and the finish is now grey – is there anyway of polishing them up to return to their original shinier look?

    • Cheryl, I have some that look like that too. I don’t think there’s any way to shine them again though.

    • I am looking for someone to help me with this because my knife handles not only turned grey but they are now very dark and actually have an almost black residue that comes off in my hand when I use it. Yuck! Tried using vinegar and it didn’t do anything. I would take grey over black anyday.

  2. A year later here’s a possible solution to the dark handles. Rada recommends making a paste of Bar Keepers Friend and water and use it to clean the handles. They even sell little single use packets now. A full can from the store would be much more economical.
