Grilled vs Pan Fried New York Strip Steak

Grilled vs Pan Fried Steak

I have never considered myself very good at making steak.  But I’ve learned a few tips recently that I want to pass along to you.

When I was asked to participate in the Walmart Steak Grill-off, I knew exactly what I wanted to try.  I’ve always wondered which is better – pan fried steak or grilled.  I suspected that the grill would win out.  Keep reading to see what our verdict was.  You might be surprised.

But first, here are a few tips on steak making that I’ve learned.

First, buy a good quality steak with lots of marbling.  You can see the marbling in the photo of the steak below.

No Recipe Required – 10 Ways to Cook Beef Roast or Other Cuts of Beef

Have a cut of beef in your freezer that you need to fix for dinner?  Not in the mood for a recipe?  No problem!

Here are some ideas to get you started.  No recipe required.

These ideas are for roasts or other cuts.  If you’ve got a nice steak, you’ll want to choose a different cooking method.

All of these ideas can be done in the oven or slow cooker.  The cooking time will depend on the cut of beef and how large the piece is.  As a general rule, beef roast or a round steak weighing about 2-3 lbs. will take 6-7  hours on high in the slow cooker.

9 ways to fix beef roast or other cuts of beef

  1. Salsa – any type.
  2. Diced tomatoes and green chilis.  Shred the meat and serve in tortillas or slice and serve with cornbread and veggies.
  3. Enchilada sauce, shred and serve in tortillas.
  4. Jar of gravy, add potatoes, carrots and onions cut in chunks.
  5. Cream of mushroom soup.  Serve with baked potatoes.
  6. Spaghetti sauce –  Pour over the meat.  Add green peppers and onions.  Serve over angel hair pasta.
  7. Bbq sauce – Shred or slice and serve on buns.
  8. Sprinkle with Italian seasonings, add onions, garlic and a splash of red wine.
  9. Bay leaf, rosemary, salt and pepper, red wine or beef broth.
  10. Make French Dip Sandwiches – Pour can of beef broth and 1 Tbs. worcestershire sauce over meat. Shred and serve on sub buns.

Pizza Steak Sandwiches in the Slow Cooker

This recipe is for Uncle Larry.

It’s meat.  Not chicken.  Not pasta.  Meat.

To quote Uncle Larry, who reads this blog regularly,  “I don’t want any of that %*#@ chicken or *%#* pasta.  Gimme some meat.”

I may have paraphrased him just a bit, but you get the essence of what he said.  Now just imagine it being said by a very tall man with a deep voice.  The kind of man who cuts down his neighbors trees under the cloak of darkness and sends three-legged dogs to Michigan (2 true stories that we don’t have time for now).

But don’t let his gruff exterior fool you.  The man is a sweet heart, but he’s serious about his meat!

I’m pretty sure Uncle Larry will like this recipe and you will too.  Here’s what you’ll need to make it:  [Read more…]

Pan Fried Steak and Steak Burgers with Red Wine Onions and Laura’s Lean Giveaway!

One of my daughter’s male friends told her that the way to catch a guy is to cook him a steak.  I asked her if she told him how to catch a girl.  She said, she didn’t know how, but it would be harder than just a cooking a steak.  (In a later conversation, we agreed that making Nutella Strudel for her, might work.)

I do know that it made my sons and husband very happy to sit down to a meal of steak and our poor man’s version, Steak Burgers.  The Red Wine Onions made them both even more delicious.

There’s a lot going on in this post – 3 recipes and a giveaway! – so keep reading… [Read more…]

Southwestern Steak and Cornbread Dressing in the Slow Cooker

I love a good slow cooker recipe, especially one that has just 4 ingredients.

This has the flavors of Southwest Beef Rolls, but it’s much easier.  A box of cornbread stuffing mix and can of tomatoes with green chilis make the recipe more like assembling and less like cooking.  I’m all about easy, so that works for me! [Read more…]
