Ingredient Spotlight: Canned Biscuits, Crescent Rolls etc.

There’s no doubt about it.  Canned biscuits, crescent rolls, cinnamon rolls, pizza dough are all super convenient.  There are so many ways to use them that go beyond popping open the tube and baking.

One of the first recipes I learned how to cook (at a 4-H meeting) was donuts made with canned biscuits.  Anyone else?  Love those things!

  2. LOVE donuts made out of canned biscuits. When we go giggin’ in the winter, we make those on the river. Apparently then they are known as Whop Biscuits, because you have to “whop” them on a corner of something to open them. I will never forget the first time I heard them called that!

    • Giggin’ as in frog giggin’? I would love to hear about that! And the term Whop Biscuits is awesome!

      • Our family “gigs” for fish, mainly suckers, and then has a fish fry afterwards. The deep fried biscuits are always on the menu. Make a hole in the fried biscuit with the end of a spoon and fill the hole with honey. Delish!!

      I am 72 an I lived in Michigan 29 years,moved south and that was my first time I heard that saying,it was on a cassette tape by Jerry Clower lol,so yes it is an old saying,down here in the south you don’t make Whop biscuits,you make homemade ;)

  5. My family has called canned bisquits as “whop” bisquits too!
    I was going to suggest pepperoni roll ups or bubble up pizza! They have both made the list already. YUM!
    Crescent rolls make some pretty good cinnamon rolls too!
    -keep the crescent rolls in rectangle shapes instead of tearing into triangles
    -pinch the seams together
    -brush rectangles with melted butter
    -sprinkle with cinnamon/sugar
    -roll up from short side and cut into pinwheels
    -lay cut side down in a baking pan and bake according to directions on the crescent rolls

    • That’s funny! My family has also called canned biscuits “whop” biscuits. I STILL call them that! I even had someone ask me for the recipe for “whop” biscuits. I told her it was the easiest recipe ever! LOL

  6. I agree, canned dough is super convenient, and I try to have some around at all times. Today I brought Cheesy Garlic Crescent Rolls and Bacon/Cheese Dogs in Blankets. Thanks for hosting this topic. Have a great week.

  8. Dip the top of the biscuit dough in melted butter, then dip into a mixture of cinnamon and sugar. Put on a baking pan with cinnamon side up. In the middle of the biscuit, make a small, deep round indention. Fill this indention with 1 teaspoon of your favorite jam or jelly (we love strawberry). Bake as directed for the biscuits. Let them cool a bit because the jelly melts and is very hot and runny right out of the oven. My son asked for these last year for his birthday instead of a cake. Love them.

  9. We love canned biscuits! I usually do a biscuit dish once a week. The biggest hits are the biscuit casserole (a Shepherd’s pie with biscuits on top instead of mashed potatoes) and cheddar bay biscuit bread (cut in quarters, melt butter, garlic & onion powder, parsley, old bay, roll in cheese, bake in loaf pan). I can’t wait to try some of these!

    • That cheddar bay biscuit bread sounds fantastic! I have a post coming up on Friday that is about using biscuits to make quick rolls. This would fit right in.

  10. My family’s fav is this: chicken broccoli braid with crescent roll crust http://allrecipes.com/recipe/chicken-and-broccoli-braid/

    We substitute 1 cup carrots and 1 cup potatoes for the chicken for a meat-free option. Totally delicious, and a real crowd pleaser!

    1 lb. sausage
    1 1/2 to 2 c. grated Cheddar cheese
    4 eggs
    2 pkg. crescent rolls
    Salt and pepper

    Line baking dish with 1 package crescent roll dough (unfolded). Press into dish so that cracks are sealed. Fry and drain sausage. Place over crescent rolls in dish. Sprinkle cheese over sausage. In a side dish, lightly beat eggs with salt and pepper. Pour over cheese. Unfold second package of crescent rolls and place on top of sausage, cheese, egg mixture.
    Bake according to instructions on can of rolls. (It sometimes takes a few minutes more.)

    Roll each biscuit into a thin circle, put canned fruit, I use apples, fold in half, crimp edges and fry or bake for small “Pies”. I also roll out each biscuit ane cut thin for dumplins.

  14. You can also make bar-b-cups or taco cups. Spread the biscuits out and put them in a muffin pan then fill with bbq hamburger meat or taco meat and add cheese to the top. This is one of my family’s quick meals that someone throws together when we don’t have a lot of time.

One of my favorite things to eat and that I got out of a cookbook that I did a “show-n-tell book report” on back in elementary school (for real, most of us were guilty of it in order to bring food to school for the class!) was canned biscuits & jelly…you’d put the biscuits on a pan, smoosh with your thumb a place in the middle, put a spoonful of jelly there & then cut flower petals around the edges (I always did 5 cuts), then bake. That jelly turns into napalm once they’re done but dang it, jelly tastes SO much better when it’s baked ON the biscuit! lol Plus, it looked cute too. :)

    I love to make French Dip sandwiches with crescents. Just roll some roast beef lunch meat, and sliced Swiss cheese up in the crescent, and bake using the roll directions. Make up a batch of Au Jus and dip. They are a favorite around our house!

  17. I love Pillsbury Flaky Biscuits and Crescent Rolls and am always trying to think of something different to do with them. Now I have 46 new ideas! This is great!

  18. I am hooked on Sopapilla Cheesecake bars. It’s so simple! You place one layer of cresent roll dough on the bottom of a 13×9″ pan, then put a mixture of cream cheese and sugar over that, and top with another layer of crescent rolls and cinnamon/sugar mix and little bits of butter. Bake according to crescent roll directions. SO TASTY!
