Ingredient Spotlight: Oranges and Orange Juice

Shares 0

Before we get to the main point of today’s Ingredient Spotlight, we need to pause for a geeky food blogger moment.  If you’ve got no interest in cameras, lenses and don’t want to hear what happens when a camera gets dropped on a tile floor, keep scrolling for the recipe links.

On Monday, one of my children, who shall remain nameless, accidentally knocked my camera off the counter and onto the tile floor.  I was upstairs when it happened.  Jim came up and told me about the incident, but he thought the camera was fine since it still took pictures.

Problem was, that the lens would not focus or zoom.  At all.

I paid a visit to the local camera shop and found out that the lens was ruined.  It would cost too much to repair it.  But, I was able to buy a 50mm lens for my Nikon D40 to replace it!  I had written that off as a possibility, because they didn’t use to sell a 50mm for this camera.  Apparently, the lens has only been available for a few months.

The photo at the top of this post was taken with the 50mm.  All the lights were off in the kitchen and it was very dark and gray afternoon.  With my kit lens, that situation would have yielded a horrible photo.

I will still need to use the Lowell lights I purchased a few months ago to get a decent amount of light.  The photo in this post is still darker than I would like, but I can’t believe the difference the 50mm lens makes.  I am not a great photographer.  I still have so much to learn.  But I think this new lens is going to help.

Now, let’s get to the oranges.  They’re like a burst of sunshine.  For the record, those are clementines in the photo, not oranges.

Here are a few of my recipes that use oranges or orange juice:

  1. So glad your camera is fixed. I am LOVING my new camera. What a difference they make in photos! And food in particular is sooooo hard to photograph. A good camera really helps.

  2. I want to invest in a 50 mm lens but just purchased my camera (and an extra lens) and feel like I need to get a bit better at using it before I invest any more money.

    • Candy, I know what you mean. I’ve wanted a 50mm for so long, but I felt like I really needed to learn to use the Nikon D40 better. I’ve had it for 3 years, but I still have so much to learn.

  3. What a great ingredient! We have been enjoying some delicious oranges and grapefruits lately! Thanks for hosting Tiffany!

  4. Thanks so much for hosting this great party Tiffany. Love the versatility of oranges. Great choice!

  5. Oh I love my 50mm! You should take a class or two from my friend Tracy. She does a great job getting you to really know your camera! Tracy blogs at

    • Kristal, thanks for the recommendation. I’ve been thinking I really need a class. Now that I’ve had my camera several years, I think I might really understand what a class would teach. Or at least understand more than I did when I first got the camera. Off to check out Tracy’s site…

  6. I was going to share some orange cookies I made at Christmas time, but I guess I never posted the recipe. So, I brought Cranberry-Orange Snack Mix, a nice variation on Chex Mix. I love keeping this one around and may just make some today myself. It is snowing here today. Thanks for hosting and have a great week.
