We were driving home from church on Sunday and I was thinking about the egg and ham sandwiches I’d planned to make when I realized that Apple Crisp would be an excellent side dish.

I know Apple Crisp is considered a dessert, but if you eat it with your meal instead of after, it’s a side dish.  A sweet, cinnamon spiced side dish.

The only problem is that Apple Crisp takes a while to bake.  But you can speed the whole process up by cooking the apples on the stove top.

No ingredient photo this time, because I was in a hurry.

Skillet Apple Crisp

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbs. butter
  • 6-7 small apples peeled, cored and sliced
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup quick oats
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 3 Tbs. butter softened
  • 1/2 cup water

Instructions

  • Melt 1 Tbs. butter in a large oven-proof skillet.
  • Add apples and cook several minutes over medium heat, stirring often. Cook until apples soften.
  • While the apples cook, stir remaining ingredients (except water) together with a fork to make crumbs.
  • Add water to apples.
  • Stir half of crumbs into apples.
  • Top with remaining crumbs.
  • Broil in oven to brown top of crisp.

Do you like sweet side dishes like sweet potato casserole, fried apples or apple crisp?  Or do you think they should be reserved for dessert?

  • Delicious, quick and very easy to make. Thank you so much for the recipe. I used my trusty iron skillet and it came out perfect. I will definitely be using this recipe again and again.

  • Dessert? Side dish? Heck. I eat this in the morning and call it “Breakfast”. It’s oatmeal and apples, after all.

  • This is seriously the best apple crisp I’ve ever had. Better than my grannies! Ssshhhh…. don’t tell her!

  • My daughter helped me make this, while I cut the apples and did some other things she made the topping and missed the add water to apples. She mixed them with the topping, it was quite funny.

  • I was searching the web to see if anyone else serves apple crisp as a side dish instead of dessert. I haven’t done it yet but will plan on it now. It will be a great accompaniement to smoked pork chops. Thanks for the time saving version!

  • I made this last night and it was very good! I love to add a shake or two of nutmeg with the cinnamon. Very easy, very yummy! Thanks!

  • Tiffany I am also a homeschool mom, with 5 still at home. I really love your website and recipes. We have tried so many and they have all been a hit with my family. Thank you so much for your yummy and creative ideas. I am looking forward to making this apple crisp. Perfect for our cool fall nights.
