Weekend Reading

I’ve been doing lots of reading on my new Kindle.  I splurged on it a few weeks ago and I’m officially in love.

– One of the books I’ve purchased is Sarah Mae’s 31 Days to Clean, Having a Martha House the Mary Way.   Every summer, I have a goal of deep cleaning our entire house.  It’s hard to get to the heavy cleaning during the school year.

I didn’t buy Sarah Mae’s book to teach me how to clean, but because she reminds me of the reason why.  Making a home is about much more than keeping it clean, putting meals on the table  etc.  It’s also about creating an atmosphere for my family to thrive, starting with my own heart attitude (something I constantly need to work on).

– Toni at The Happy Housewife shares how to make Roasted Red Pepper Hummus.  I’ve been wanting to try that for a long time.

– Oh, for a nap/quiet time schedule like Connie at Smockity Frocks has for her family.  She’s one smart woman!

– Bible School season is here.  In case you’re in charge of meals, here’s an old post I wrote on cooking for a crowd – dinner menus and recipes for 100.

What are you up to this weekend?  Whatever it is, I hope you have a great one!

I have a new Kindle too and really am enjoying it. My boys (husband and sons) gave it to me for Mother’s Day – a complete surprise. I need to take a look at that book – I would love to completely clean and organize the house this summer.

I made something last night that was delicious and easy – mango salsa. Maybe everyone knows about this and has made it a dozen times, but it was my first time! The ingredients were a ripe mango, some sweet onion (Vidalia), cherry tomatoes, green pepper, cilantro, olive oil (just a few tablespoons), lime juice, and salt and pepper. I diced everything fairly small, mixed it all up, and tasted and “fiddled with” it until I got it right. Then chilled it for a couple of hours. So, so good. I served it with tilapia that I sprinkled with lime juice, dusted with cornmeal, and cooked in a non-stick skillet (with just a little bit of olive oil). The side dish was orzo with a little butter and fresh grated parmesan.

    • The mango salsa sounds great! Thanks for sharing the recipe.

I forgot to say that, since I didn’t have any type of hot pepper on hand, I added a few drops of Tabasco sauce. We don’t like salsa to be very hot, so the Tabasco just gave it a little zip. But those who like it hot could easily add diced jalapeno or other hot pepper.

  2. I don’t have a kindle but my mom does and it looks pretty cool! Where did you get that pretty cover for yours? I’m not up to much this weekend, just working on online stuff and watching the end of The Tudors series. :)

    • Ali, I got the cover at Best Buy when I bought the Kindle. They didn’t have a lot to choose from, but I do like this one.

I bought a leather Kindle cover on Amazon that is similar to Laura’s for about $16.

      • Is that the latest Kindle? – I have noticed a few models available on Amazon and not sure that the difference is.

        • Jane, it is the latest Kindle, the one with special offers. It was the lowest price one they have. I love, love, love it! So many free books and some are really good too.

  3. I have had my kindle for about 1 1/2 years now. My best friend bought it for me. I love it!! I never thought I would, but I do. I feel so lost without it. Recently, it broke (screen cracked on it). I figured I would have to dish out another 190 bucks for a new one since it was out of warrenty. As a last resort, I called Amazon in hopes of at least getting a coupon or a discount on a new one. They told me they would replace it for $40 plus shipping, so for around $55 bucks, I got a new one and had it in 2 days even with it being out of warrenty! To me that is customer service! My husband said that they replaced it because without it I was not buying books from Amazon. My new one came yesterday and I felt like I had just found heaven. I recommend the Kindle to anyone that loves to read and Amazon customer service is outstanding.

    • I had a friend who said the same thing about the customer service for broken kindle. I ended up buying the one with special offers, which was only $114. The ads don’t interfere with reading at all. It doesn’t have 3g wireless, but I can connect at home or any other place with internet. I’m planning to sit down in a few minutes and read, read, read :-)

  4. Totally agree about the 31 Days to Clean by Sarah Mae. It is not the how to of cleaning but the heart of the home (homemaker). Worth the read!

  5. I’ve been wanting to try making the roasted red pepper hummus as well. I love hummus!
