We have a small garden that I usually plant with tomatoes, cucumbers, jalapeno and bell peppers, cilantro, basil, thyme, and parsley. We have clay soil here in Tulsa that I ammended with top soil and peat moss. Question regarding the SFG gardens; do the roots go deep enough in the planters to sustain tomatoes and cucumbers? I know that when I pull up the plants in the winter the root systems are pretty deep . . . .

I LOVED seeing your SFG pictures!! A friend of mine turned me on to it last year and we did ours using that method and were AMAZED at the results! This year we’re actually doubling our space and planting nearly double of everything! But, like one other reader posted, it’s still a bit too wet and cold here in Ohio to get it all going… I’m anxious to get out there and get it all in the ground!! I enjoy gardening a ton – enough that I have started a CSA to share the love of fresh produce with my community. Thankfully we live on a 135 acre farm so I have the space to begin this small business that will hopefully in a few years time grow into a full-time job. I’ll be planting many garden staples such as potatoes, corn, zucchini, tomatoes, peppers, etc. Can’t wait to get going on it!

Are you going to share the recipe for fish tacos? I have been making them for a while now and everyone who has them loves them. It took my husband a while to get me to try them – I’m a little resistant to change – but once I did, I was “hooked”:)

We recently moved into a rental house with raised beds just waiting to be cleaned out and planted. Guess I’d better get in gear!

As far as colleges, may I recommend The Master’s College (www.masters.edu) in Santa Clarita, California? It’s a private Christian school, but they really do try to make a quality education affordable for parents and students, so don’t be put off by the tuition listed. It’s a highly rated school in a great location — you’d barely know you’re in L.A. County except for the climate.

I am SO glad you posted pictures! I’ve had a row garden for the past two years and am going to a SFG this year. I love the trellis, too. I read a quote somewhere that “April is the cruelest of months” for gardeners. Certainly true for me here in Ohio…really want to be out there but still too cold and wet.

I really wish I had some place to garden…..I’ve not inherited my father’s green thumb but am itching to see if I can actually grow some of my own produce. My kids have learned a lot from my dad and enjoy gardening…..my only problem is how can I remember to actually water my garden? lol That’s what I usually forget to do!

Square foot gardening…I’m giving it a go this year. Your garden looks so neat and tidy. My son also visited colleges and has decided on Wheaton in Chicago….now keep in mind this boy is from sunny California and he lives in his rainbow flip flops. Should be interesting and I will miss him tons! Thanks for all the wonderful recipes.

Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your recipes — real food for real folks. Last night I made your ham/broccoli rolls with swiss cheese sauce. Instead of broccoli I used steamed asparagus spears, and also some sliced roasted peppers that I had on hand in the fridge — it turned out great! Fancy enough for a special meal, yet simple enough that I will make it when we go to the beach in May. It’s been a beautiful week here in west Tennessee and I’ve planted strawberries, onion sets, asparagus crowns and potatos in my raised garden beds. Hope to sow lettuce seeds today before it rains. I’m just learning how to blog, take digital pictures, and upload them and I hope to be able to make a visual record of my garden this year.
