Easy Meatball Subs

I’m not sure why I never thought of doing this before.  It was so quick and simple.  My boys were very happy and the rest of us liked the subs too.  I used frozen meatballs and a jar of spaghetti sauce, so it just can’t get any easier. Perfect for a busy night.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • frozen meatballs (I used about 1/3 of the package)
  • 1 jar of spaghetti sauce
  • shredded mozzarella cheese
  • sub buns

Microwave the frozen meatballs for a minute or two, just to thaw them a bit.  Put them in a pan and pour the sauce over the top and let it heat for several minutes.  I cut the meatballs in half so they would stay on the sandwiches better.

Split the buns open and toast them under the broiler in the oven.  Put the meatballs on the buns and top with cheese.  Stick the sandwiches back under the broiler to melt the cheese.

That’s it.  Dinner’s on the table in about 10 minutes.  You can’t beat that!

  1. My family loves this type of sandwich. I keep homemade meatballs and pizza sauce in the freezer, to pull out and heat in the microwave for a quick supper on busy nights of this delicious sandwich.

An even easier way is to throw the frozen meatballs in the crockpot, dump the sauce over top and let them cook on low for 4-5 hours. We’ve done this many times in my household – in fact just this past weekend!

I’ve made these meatball subs for dinner and they are good, filling, and EASY! I also dump the frozen meatballs in the crockpot with the sauce in the morning. They are perfect for a busy day because it takes just a few minutes to put the meatballs & sauce in the crockpot and then when you’re ready to eat it’s ready to go.

  4. I do these about once a month or every couple months for a quick dinner – and I definitely use the crock pot and then everything is easy to assemble. I don’t use shredded cheese though – I use sliced mozzarella for ease. For the non meatball eaters, I make turkey subs as well if we have sliced turkey on hand.

I do love that you spotlighted this – a good reminder that a good dinner doesn’t always have to be elaborate – sometimes a sub sandwich, a side of chips and a salad works well! Something I’ll need to keep in mind once baseball/softball season hits!

  5. I could eat a meatball sub everyday….

  6. I make these in the crockpot all the time too. Frozen meatballs, a jar of spaghetti sauce, set it on low & go to work. When I come home, we make sandwiches, OR, if we have some that want spaghetti (which my husband won’t eat) I boil the noodles up & they have spaghetti while the rest have the subs. Everybody’s happy!!

  7. LOVE quick and easy meals..last night it was pancakes for us :)

  8. A friend told me about this meal a few years ago and we love it- Actually just made it last Saturday for friends that were over! I put it in a crockpot that morning and let it cook until lunch or dinner….yummy!!!

  9. I made these subs for dinner tonight after seeing them on your website. My family LOVED them! So easy and filling! I don’t know why I didn’t think of it sooner. I had sliced provolone cheese on hand, so that was the cheese I used. Truly delish! Thanks, Tiffany!

  10. I made these for lunch today! Yum! The only difference is that I can’t bear to use jarred sauce, so I started with tomato puree (to decrease sodium) and flavor with garlic and sliced green peppers, italian seasoning, basil, and a little s&p. Threw the meatballs in and let simmer until heated through and the peppers were tender. Then broiled with the cheese over the top on some Sara Lee White Wheat Hoagies. SO good is the only way to describe it! And so easy! Thanks again!

  11. Even better when you use emrils roasted garlic pasta sauce! I do that with the rosina Italian style meatballs, this meal is excellent and under 10 dollars! Love it

  12. We add pepperoni to our meatball subs, We add parmesan cheese, mozzarella or provolone cheese, peppers, lots of peppers. (I like the tamed jalapenos. My husband & kids like the jalapenos, hot bell pepper or pepperocini)

[...] But, I still think it’s a great idea to have homemade meatballs in the freezer.  They taste much better than the store-bought kind and they are better for you too.  You can use them for spaghetti, of course.  But they’re also good in Sweet and Sour Meatballs over Rice and Meatball Subs.
