Sweet success! It was just one ripe strawberry, but it tasted good and it was from our very own garden. My 6 year old shared it with me. We probably could have left it to ripen in the sun another day or two, but we couldn’t wait.
I’m admitting my gardening ignorance here (not for the first time, either), but I had no idea that potatoes bloomed with such pretty purple flowers.
On the downside, we’ve got tiny black bugs eating up the potato leaves. We caved on the idea of organic and my dh dusted the plants with a little Sevin dust. I hope it works. I wanted the potatoes for us, not to feed the bugs. Don’t judge me because I’m not all the way green. I’m working on it. Sort of.
See those little green cherry tomatoes! I can’t wait till they turn red. We’ve also got a few small green peppers. And I used some of the lettuce to make a salad this week. It was very good and fun to harvest from the garden.
What’s growing in you backyard? And how do you keep the bugs away? Any organic methods out there that work?

Your garden is coming along beautifully! I have slug issues so I bought a product called Sluggo. It says that it won’t harm pets so I like that. It seems to work pretty well.

I’m also new to gardening…I’m trying my hand at container gardening…we have too many deer, rabbits, etc to do an actual garden and it is just the two of us, so we don’t need anything big…I’m starting small…tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, strawberries and blueberries…

Your garden is looking great. I know nothing about vegetable gardening and am always impressed with what you can grow in a small garden. Your strawberry reminded me of that children’s book – the little mouse, the red ripe strawberry and the big hungry bear – or something like that!

I don’t know if it will work on the little black bugs you mentioned, but alot of gardening books say to put 5 drops of dishwashing detergent into 1 gallon of water and to spray the leaves (don’t forget to the undersides of leaves) once or twice a week. The impression I got was that the detergent makes the leaves unappetizing and drives the bugs to better pickings rather than killing the bugs. Might be bug-specific but couldn’t hurt to try.
I am planning my first SFG right now for the spring so I can’t testify on the detergent solution from a first-hand basis, but I plan on putting it in one of my spare weedkilling pressure sprayers and keeping it handy…
