Square Foot Garden – Trellis added

square-foot-garden-trellis2

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve updated on our garden boxes.  On Mother’s Day weekend we planted tomatoes, basil, peppers, cucumber, and parsley.  The cucumber got broken off, so that was replaced a few days later.  I’m not sure this one is going to survive either though, because we had a very late frost earlier in the week.  My basil took a hit, although it will probably survive.  One tomato plant looks kind of pitiful.

The potatoes are doing great.  They grew so much this week, even since I took these photos.  The carrots are growing.  The lettuce is slow.  We started it from seed and it just isn’t taking off.

My husband built the trellises last weekend.  He used 5 foot electric conduit and string.  Fancy stuff, but hopefully soon we’ll have tomatoes growing up it.  I can’t wait for that first, ripe tomato.

Here’s a close up of the trellis:

How does your garden grow?  Are things coming along like you hoped?  Any battles with critters or weather?  Is there anyone out there who already has sunk their teeth into a garden fresh ripe tomato?  Share with me!

I’m still waiting to plant mine. If it doesn’t get done this weekend (dh has to build the box) then I think it won’t happen.

Kristal, I hope you were able to plant this weekend. It’s raining here this morning, which would put a damper (sorry for the pun) on gardening. ~~Tiffany

I got a late start this year, so my tomatoes aren’t even in the ground yet. I’m waiting for the seedlings to get a bit bigger. I also planted watermelon and bell peppers in seed cups. My basil is going crazy, though; I have three healthy pots of it! I have corn and two different varieties of green beans that are growing well, if a bit slowly. Sadly, the strawberry plants that I ordered from Park Seed still look like dried twigs sticking out of the growing bags I also decided to try. Worst-case scenario: if I don’t get much if a harvest this summer, I’ll start over with greens in the fall :-) .

Dani, your basil sounds wonderful. I think mine is going to recover, but I was sad it got nipped by frost. I hope you get your tomatoes in the ground soon. There’s nothing like a homegrown tomato. ~~Tiffany

It looks great! I can’t wait until I have the time/energy to work on my own garden!

  4. Love all your posts on your raised beds. We still have plenty of room for an in-ground garden, but have been thinking about it would easy to cover and protect the plants better from the deer with the raised beds (and less weeds, too!). Rig up some kind of covering. Anxious to see all your results.

I love your new site, Tiffany! (Well, it’s new to me…I have neglected my laptop for some time.) What a high-tech garden you have. Mine is just four little boxes with some string tied to the fence for the peas to climb on. I do have spinach, little onions that may not ever grow up, and peas to harvest. The summer plants are still gathering steam, but I have tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers (which I have never been able to grow successfully), and butternut squash (my favorite). We grow herbs in pots to help control them. I hope to get green beans and some pumpkins or gourds in the ground this week. I LOVE watching pumpkins and gourds grow. Such fun.

Now, I need to go read more. I’ve missed so many of your posts. Oh, we made your Crockpot Cantonese Sweet and Sour Chicken the other day. It was sooooo yummy!
