Italian Sausage with Bowties

by Tiffany on February 21, 2009

This recipe comes from Bethany at For the Love of Grub.
It’s highly recommended by the ladies on the Sonlight Forums and by me. Even my picky eaters liked it. As a bonus it’s fast and easy to make.

Gather up your ingredients:

1 lb. bulk Italian sausage
1 box bowtie pasta
2 cans Italian style stewed tomatoes, drained and chopped
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 cloves of garlic
1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. dried basil
1 1/2 cups half & half (or heavy whipping cream)

Cook the pasta according to the package directions. While that cooks, brown the sausage, onion, garlic, red pepper flakes in a large skillet. Drain and rinse under hot water to remove the extra fat. Return to the skillet and add the tomatoes and half & half, salt and basil. Bring it to a boil, then simmer it until the sauce reduces a bit. Drain the pasta and put it back into the cooking pot. Add in the sauce and stir. Serve with parmesan cheese.

Have I mentioned before how much I love your blog? :) All the photos make it so much more fun, too.

BTW, if you use condensed milk, it lessens the fat/calories and adds nutrients (twice as much calcium as reg milk), plus it’s a nice thick consistency like cream. I find this helpful with many dishes (even canned tomato soup!). Found that tip in the Sneaky Chef cookbook.

This is always a hit at our house! I’ll have to try it with the Italian sausage next time.

Looks so yummy…we love bowties here too. Where I work they used to do a “pasta bar” and this crazy Mexican guy would throw whatever you wanted in with the bowties and saute it around and cover it with some sauce, all while serenading you. Made working there a lot more worthwhile.

I love that I don’t need a cook book anymore. I can just come to your blog and see what to fix for dinner. So, I thank you for that.
