Spice Organization

Since it’s January and people are interested in organizing their homes, I thought I’d share one of my favorite ideas. We moved into a new house last spring and I had to come up with a new system for my spices and seasonings. Those little bottles can be a challenge to organize. After trying a few things that didn’t work, I popped an over-the-door shoe rack with clear pockets on the pantry door and found success. I organize the spices by type of food they are usually used in. Baking spices together, Mexican together, Italian…

I love over-the-door shoe racks. I’ve got one on the inside of the coat closet full of school and office supplies. I thought about putting one on the garage door with tools that get used often, glue, tape etc., but I’m not sure about giving my kids that much access to adhesives like super glue and duct tape.

Yes, there are two half bottles of oregano in that pocket. First time I noticed that.

Happy New Year and happy organizing, no matter which room you’re tackling. (Or maybe the New Year doesn’t make you want to organize something – I’m not trying to guilt you into anything!)

  1. Great idea! That would eliminate the multple bottles of everything I have because I can’t find it. Thanks!

What a fabulous idea! We live in a small space, and I’m always looking for clever solutions like this one, thanks!

  3. That’s a great way to organize spices. I keep most of my spices in a drawer on their sides in alphabetical order. It works well, but I have to keep larger packages like dried whole chiles in a separate location.

  4. You are a GENIUS! I LOVE that idea! No matter how many times I re-organize my spices, I’m always scrabling and having to take them ALL out just to find one! I am totally doing this! Thanks for the great tip!!!!!

  5. That really looks very easy and organized!

Stopping over from SITS. Happy New Year!

Stopping by from the SITS Saturday challenge — and I was happy to see that one of two blogs to comment on was yours since I’ve recently added you to my list of favorite blogs to check. 8. that is a great idea! do you have any thoughts for those of us who don’t have a pantry door like that?

  9. I wish I had ideas for people with no pantry door. I have seen spice racks that mount to the inside of a cabinet door and the home improvement stores. Maybe that would work?

  10. what a great organizing idea!

What an awesome idea! Now I wish I had a pantry. We are so short on cupboard space and for the size of home we have, that’s really a shame!

  12. What a great idea! I always have multiple bottles of spices no matter how hard I try to organize.

I love that idea! That would work so much better than shoving them all on three shelves in mass chaos. Thanks!

  17. wow! Just found your post and I love this idea! I need to get a couple of these organizers!

  18. Love the idea….wish I had a pantry that I could use this idea on. My sister doesn’t have a pantry either but she hangs a wire shelf type thing on the side of her fridge. It works, but I don’t like everything seen.

  19. Meant to say too…my spices are in my hutch on a lazy susan. It works for me…just wish I had a walk in pantry!

  20. Anonymous says:

How dirty do they get and are they easy to clean at the seams?

    • The pockets don’t really get dirty. All the spices are in bottles. I do keep garlic bulbs in there, so there are some of the papery skins to clean out of one pocket every now and then, but it’s easy to do.

  21. Wow! Thats a great idea! I need to find a way to make my spices more accessible…

  22. I love this idea…thanks for sharing!

  23. That is a great idea! I use those hanging shoe organizers for everything under the sun and I never thought of that! This idea totally frees up the cabinet space I use for spices, too. Thanks!
